First Lines Fridays (32) – November 19, 2021

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

Today’s First Lines:

“Beams of pale moonlight drifted through the forest canopy as Kallinvar pushed his foot against Urak’s lifeless body, turning it over onto its back. Its leathery grey skin was latticed with a motley collection of scars and fresh wounds. He curled his lip with indifference. He had long ago lost count of how many of these monstrosities he had sent to the void.”

Title: Of Blood and Fire

Author: Ryan Cahill

Publication Date: March 20, 2021

Goodreads Synopsis

Born in fire. Tempered in blood.

Epheria is a land divided by war and mistrust. The High Lords of the south squabble and fight, only kept in check by the Dragonguard, traitors of a time long past, who serve the empire of the North.

In the remote villages of southern Epheria, still reeling from the tragic loss of his brother, Calen Bryer prepares for The Proving—a test of courage and skill that not all survive.

But when three strangers arrive in the village of Milltown, with a secret they are willing to die for, Calen’s world is ripped from under him and he is thrust headfirst into a war that has been raging for centuries.

There is no prophecy. His coming was not foretold.

He bleeds like any man, and bleed he will.

Thoughts & Comments

This book has been on my TBR for a while, and I recently receive the eARC for the second book. So, I’ll be powering through both of them and the prequel novella before the end of the year. I’m looking forward to it, and these first lines only build my interest even more.

Does this book sound like something you would like? Why or why not? Let me know in the comments!
