Top 5 Tuesday – Top 5 Books That I Didn’t Get to in 2021

Hello everyone! Welcome back for another Top 5 Tuesday! The prompt for today is the top 5 books that I didn’t get to in 2021. First of all, this topic feels like a personal attack. lol. Just kidding (kind of). There were so many books I wanted to get to in 2021 that I just did not have the time for. Second, I don’t need this much negativity so close to my birthday, Meeghan, but it seems like my birthday month harbors all of the attack topics. So, at least we’ll get them over with quickly since it is the shortest month? Anyway, here are my top 5 books I didn’t get to last year. Top 5 Tuesday was created by Shanah @ Bionic Book Worm, and is now being hosted at Meeghan Reads!

A Master of Djinn by P. Djèlí Clark

Cairo, 1912: Though Fatma el-Sha’arawi is the youngest woman working for the Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments and Supernatural Entities, she’s certainly not a rookie, especially after preventing the destruction of the universe last summer.

So when someone murders a secret brotherhood dedicated to one of the most famous men in history, al-Jahiz, Agent Fatma is called onto the case. Al-Jahiz transformed the world 50 years ago when he opened up the veil between the magical and mundane realms, before vanishing into the unknown. This murderer claims to be al-Jahiz, returned to condemn the modern age for its social oppressions. His dangerous magical abilities instigate unrest in the streets of Cairo that threaten to spill over onto the global stage.

Alongside her Ministry colleagues and her clever girlfriend Siti, Agent Fatma must unravel the mystery behind this imposter to restore peace to the city – or face the possibility he could be exactly who he seems….

Seven Deaths of an Empire by G.R. Matthews

The Emperor is dead. Long live the Empire.

General Bordan has a lifetime of duty and sacrifice behind him in the service of the Empire. But with rebellion brewing in the countryside, and assassins, thieves and politicians vying for power in the city, it is all Bordan can do to protect the heir to the throne.

Apprentice Magician Kyron is assigned to the late Emperor’s honour guard escorting his body on the long road back to the capital. Mistrusted and feared by his own people, even a magician’s power may fail when enemies emerge from the forests, for whoever is in control of the Emperor’s body, controls the succession.

Seven lives and seven deaths to seal the fate of the Empire.

Winter’s Orbit by Everina Maxwell

While the Iskat Empire has long dominated the system through treaties and political alliances, several planets, including Thea, have begun to chafe under Iskat’s rule. When tragedy befalls Imperial Prince Taam, his Thean widower, Jainan, is rushed into an arranged marriage with Taam’s cousin, the disreputable Kiem, in a bid to keep the rising hostilities between the two worlds under control.

But when it comes to light that Prince Taam’s death may not have been an accident, and that Jainan himself may be a suspect, the unlikely pair must overcome their misgivings and learn to trust one another as they navigate the perils of the Iskat court, try to solve a murder, and prevent an interplanetary war… all while dealing with their growing feelings for each other.

Little Thieves by Margaret Owen

Once upon a time, there was a horrible girl…

Vanja Schmidt knows that no gift is freely given, not even a mother’s love–and she’s on the hook for one hell of a debt. Vanja, the adopted goddaughter of Death and Fortune, was Princess Gisele’s dutiful servant up until a year ago. That was when Vanja’s otherworldly mothers demanded a terrible price for their care, and Vanja decided to steal her future back… by stealing Gisele’s life for herself.

The real Gisele is left a penniless nobody while Vanja uses an enchanted string of pearls to take her place. Now, Vanja leads a lonely but lucrative double life as princess and jewel thief, charming nobility while emptying their coffers to fund her great escape. Then, one heist away from freedom, Vanja crosses the wrong god and is cursed to an untimely end: turning into jewels, stone by stone, for her greed.

Vanja has just two weeks to figure out how to break her curse and make her getaway. And with a feral guardian half-god, Gisele’s sinister fiancé, and an overeager junior detective on Vanja’s tail, she’ll have to pull the biggest grift yet to save her own life.

For the Wolf by Hannah F. Whitten

The first daughter is for the Throne.
The second daughter is for the Wolf.

For fans of Uprooted and The Bear and the Nightingale comes a dark fantasy novel about a young woman who must be sacrificed to the legendary Wolf of the Wood to save her kingdom. But not all legends are true, and the Wolf isn’t the only danger lurking in the Wilderwood.

As the only Second Daughter born in centuries, Red has one purpose-to be sacrificed to the Wolf in the Wood in the hope he’ll return the world’s captured gods.

Red is almost relieved to go. Plagued by a dangerous power she can’t control, at least she knows that in the Wilderwood, she can’t hurt those she loves. Again.

But the legends lie. The Wolf is a man, not a monster. Her magic is a calling, not a curse. And if she doesn’t learn how to use it, the monsters the gods have become will swallow the Wilderwood-and her world-whole.

So, there you have it. The top 5 books that I didn’t get to in 2021. Hopefully, I’ll get to them this year. If not, I’m sure I can count on Meeghan to come up with a prompt to make me feel guilty about it. 😉 What books did you not get to last year? Let me know what they are down in the comments, and let’s spread the shame! lol

  1. OMG!! Little Thieves!! That one also belongs on my list… 😅
I promise to make next Feb much nicer… we can pretend next week’s prompt is: Books I would buy Chris for his birthday though. Would that help?!! (I’m so sorry 😭)

    • I really want to read Little Thieves after making this list. My TBR for February is already a hot mess that I’ll probably never finish reading, but maybe I’ll throw it on there just to see what happens. My birthday is actually next week, though. So, I’m not gonna say no to that alternate prompt. 😉 Just kidding. These are actually quite fun, and I like seeing what everyone else hasn’t read yet. It makes me feel like less of a slacker to know I’m not alone.

  2. Ooh I loved A Master of Djinn, and For The Wolf has some excellent aesthetics!! Winters orbit is on my tbr for this year, and I need to add Little Thieves to the tbr because it sounds SO good! Great list! 💜

  3. Only one of these isn’t on my TBR but I’m so looking forward to the others. I just finished reading A Dead Djinn in Cairo last month and it was so wow. I’m excited to see what magic Clark can make with a full-length novel 😃 I hope you enjoy all of these!
