Today I’m reviewing The Great Hunt by Robert Jordan, which is the second book of The Wheel of Time series. I enjoyed this one a bit more than the first book in the series, and I’m looking forward to continuing with the other books in the future.

The Wheel of Time turns and Ages come and go, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth returns again. In the Third Age, an Age of Prophecy, the World and Time themselves hang in the balance. What was, what will be, and what is, may yet fall under the Shadow.

For centuries, gleemen have told the tales of The Great Hunt of the Horn. So many tales about each of th Hunters, and so many Hunters to tell of…Now the Horn itself is found: the Horn of Valere long thought only legend, the Horn which will raise the dead heroes of the ages. And it is stolen.

I enjoyed this book even more than the first one! While it was still a bit bloated at over 700 pages and dragged a bit in the middle at times, the pacing of this story compared to the first was much more consistent. The world-building was really good, and the book highlighted some new locations, groups, and conflicts. The story itself seemed a bit more focused even though the characters were split up for a good bit of it, which I liked. The Eye of the World had to introduce all the characters while also telling both a singular story and the first installment of the larger narrative, which was a bit rocky at times. Whereas the first story felt a bit aimless until it found its focus in the last quarter of the book, the quest for the Horn was a central part of this book throughout and led to a cohesive story with a great ending. I loved getting to learn more about the Aes Sedai, as well, and I can see how the first season of the TV show was inspired by a mashup of the first book and this one in regards to the politics. I still loved all the characters, and it felt that many of them were deepened here in significant ways. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing where the story goes next and already have the next book on hold at the library. Therefore, I rate this one 5 out of 5 stars.
