WWW Wednesday (6) – June 15, 2022

Hello, everyone! It’s Wednesday! That means it is time for another WWW Wednesday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words. I’ll be answering the following questions:

  1. What did you read last?
  2. What are you currently reading?
  3. What will you read next?

What did you read last?

My reading time took a nosedive this week. My partner returned from her business trip, and Sunday was our twelfth anniversary. So, I’ve spent most of the week spending time with her, which included a very long marathon of the Jurassic Park movies (one of her favorite movie franchises). Then we went to see the new Jurassic World movie last night. We were both a bit disappointed in it because it took way too long for people to start getting eaten by the dinosaurs. Oh well. On the reading front, I did manage to finish two books, This Wicked Fate and The Ruin of Kings. I enjoyed the interesting take on mythology in This Wicked Fate, along with the fast-paced adventure and great Black and queer rep. It was much better, in my opinion, than its predecessor, This Poison Heart. I finally finished listening to The Ruin of Kings, and it was a wild ride. I honestly think I need a flow chart of some sort to make sense of it all. lol. The audiobook was really hard to follow at times because of the multiple timelines, footnotes, and reincarnations, but I’m pretty sure I got the gist of it. Despite having some trouble keeping up, I loved the characters, world-building, and writing a lot. I’ve already checked out the sequel from the library, and I think I’m gonna switch to print for this one or do a combination of print and audiobook.

What was my favorite of the week? My favorite this week has to be The Ruin of Kings by Jenn Lyons. The writing was fantastic, and the story was so intricate and intriguing that I just didn’t want to stop listening to it even though I didn’t know what the hell was going on most of the time. I got it (mostly) in the end and am excited to read the next book.

What are you currently reading?

I just started A Little Bit Country by Brian D. Kennedy this morning. I’m already over 20% of the way through it, and it is not even noon yet. So, I think it is safe to say I like it. It’s a cute coming-of-age story and has a pretty hilarious meet cute. I’m also reading The Prince of Magic and Lies by Elizabeth S. Trafalgar. It has been okay so far, but the pace feels a bit slow. The main character is also someone that provokes a lot of mixed emotions for me, which has made the reading experience an interesting one because I can’t decide if I should be rooting for him or not..

What will you read next?

I still really need to get to In the Shadow of Lightning… I also got a new ARC I’ve been waiting for from Robert Roth, Rise of the Renegade Child. I enjoyed the first book in his series, and I’ve been anticipating reading the next one since last year. I also picked up Bloom from the library and am going to fit it in, as well. I’ll also be starting to read my BBNYA excerpts now that round one of the competition has started. That’s probably more than enough for this week, but hopefully I’ll get to mood read some others too.

What have you been reading? Have you read any of these books? If so, what did you think? Let me know in the comments!

    • It was definitely a different, but enjoyable, read. I can see it being one of those books that people either love or hate because it presents the story is such a strange way. I really liked it, though.
