WWW Wednesday (11) – July 20, 2022

Hello, everyone! It’s Wednesday! That means it is time for another WWW Wednesday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words. I’ll be answering the following questions:

  1. What did you read last?
  2. What are you currently reading?
  3. What will you read next?

What did you read last?

This has been a pretty good reading week. I didn’t read quite as much as usual because I was ill for a bit, but all of the books I finished were fantastic. Apparently the theme for the week was ‘strong women who break through the confines of an oppressive family/society.’ All three of the books I read approached the topic in different ways, and each one was a fascinating exploration of the negative effects of patriarchy. Juniper & Thorn by Ava Reid was a brutally honest window into the mind of someone who has experienced abuse. If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to live with that hell, this book will provide a blunt look at the psychological toll of those experiences. The Daughter of Doctor Moreau by Silvia Moreno-Garcia was a fascinating science fiction historical brought to life by the author’s beautiful prose. Finally, The Book Eaters by Sunyi Dean was probably one of my favorite books of the year, so far. It was such a unique concept, and I was hooked from the very first chapter.

What was my favorite of the week? My favorite this week was definitely The Book Eaters, and I honestly think I may have found my favorite book of the year.

What are you currently reading?

I’m approximately halfway through The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy by Megan Bannen. This has been a fun read so far. I love pretty much all of the characters, and they have great chemistry together. I think the witty dialogue is probably the book’s biggest strength.

What will you read next?

I plan to read my ARC of The Garden of Empire next followed by The Jasmine Throne so that I can get to my ARC of its sequel.

I hope you’ve all had a great week! What have you been reading? Have you read any of these books? If so, what did you think? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I just started Hart & Mercy last night because my latest nonfic just isn’t doing it for me right now. I’ve barely started it because I was so sun-tired last night after kayaking that I was falling asleep reading it. BUT I’m liking what little I’ve read so far. It’s too early to tell, but it reminds me a little bit of THE LEAGUE OF GENTLEWOMEN WITCHES by India Holton, which I read earlier this year and found delightful.

  2. Whoa, The Book Eaters is potentially fave of the year!? That’s incredible and has me looking forward to it even more now 😃 It does sound like such a unique premise and I love the cover already. I hope you enjoy The Jasmine Throne—it definitely keeps with your theme this week about strong women (they’re amazing). Happy reading!

  3. […] cover 100% caught my attention. I wasn’t going to read it this soon, but Chris’s reaction to it piqued my interest to a level that made the decision for me. I checked this out from the […]
