WWW Wednesday (15) – August 17, 2022

Hello, everyone! It’s Wednesday! That means it is time for another WWW Wednesday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words. I’ll be answering the following questions:

  1. What did you read last?
  2. What are you currently reading?
  3. What will you read next?

What did you read last?

This was another really great week of reading. I finished The Dragon’s Promise, which was a fun, but erratic, conclusion to the Six Crimson Cranes duology (see review). I listened to Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare. It was an enjoyable read, and I definitely didn’t expect the ending. It felt a bit bloated with info dumps at times, though, and the angst was a little overbearing and on the nose, which is weird for me to say because I love some angst. It just seemed a bit too contrived? I also read my ARC of Longshadow, which was an interesting murder mystery/regency romance with some really great fantasy elements related to death (see review). Finally, I pulled an all-nighter night before last to finish The Oleander Sword because I just could not put it down (see review). If you liked The Jasmine Throne or enjoy high fantasy with sapphic leads, you cannot miss this one!

What was my favorite of the week? My favorite was definitely The Oleander Sword. It provided a great payoff for all the setup of the first book while also putting the pieces in place for an epic final book.

What are you currently reading?

I’m currently listening to Storm Front by Jim Butcher. I’ve wanted to read The Dresden Files for a really long time, and I’m excited to finally dive in. I’m enjoying it so far, and it is a good mix of fantasy and detective elements. I’m also reading Second Spear by Kerstin Hall, but I haven’t made it far enough to really have an opinion yet.

What will you read next?

I’ve got several more ARCs to get through, including The Spear Cuts Through Water, This Is Why They Hate Us, and A Taste of Gold and Iron. I’m hoping I can get to them all, but I have a lot of appointments and other stuff happening over the next couple weeks. So, we’ll see…

I hope you’ve all had a great week! What have you been reading? Have you read any of these books? If so, what did you think? Let me know in the comments!

  1. Ooh, all the books you’ve got lined up next look amazing and I also can’t wait to read them. I’ve also been pretty curious about The Dresden Files so I’ll look forward to seeing your review for that one. Happy reading 🙂

    • I really do have a great line up… not just this week but for the next few months. There are so many great books coming out, and I can’t keep up with them all. lol. I enjoyed the first book of The Dresden Files. It showed its age a bit at times, but if you like detective stories with magic, it was a fun one. I plan to continue the series.

    • I enjoyed Storm Front. It was a bit predictable, and Harry’s obsession with the looks of every woman he met was off-putting at times. I liked his gruffness, though, and, overall, the book was a fun ride. I’ll definitely be continuing the series!

  2. Oooo wow, starting The Dresden Files, exciting! I want to go back and reread the early ones, especially as I want to know how they hold up (I haven’t read since college). I know I was a little taken aback by some of the male gaze elements in the more recent books (there was a gap of several years between books), and I’m realizing I must have given it a pass earlier on. But setting that aside, the overall plotting in those books is pretty dang good. It really kicks in around book 3 or 4.

    • Yeah. There was A LOT of male gaze stuff in the first book that was a bit uncomfortable to read. Pretty much every single female character was described based on how horny they made Harry. It got on my nerves fast. I liked everything else about the book, though, and I plan to continue with the series.
