WWW Wednesday (18) – September 6, 2022

Hello, everyone! It’s Wednesday! That means it is time for another WWW Wednesday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words. I’ll be answering the following questions:

  1. What did you read last?
  2. What are you currently reading?
  3. What will you read next?

What did you read last?

This week has gone by so quickly. I’ve been dealing with a pretty significant pest control problem. I found a giant wasp hive in my attic, and it has been a struggle to get rid of them. The exterminator has been out twice already, and it seems like there are always more of them no matter how many he seems to kill. It appears we have at least three major nests across the entire front of our house that descend down into the walls from the attic. So, it is kind of a nightmare scenario. The exterminator is coming back today with hopes of removing at least one of the nests. Fingers crossed some progress gets made… On the bright side, it was a pretty quiet holiday weekend. I slept a lot, visited with my parents, and got some reading done.

Speaking of reading, I finished three books this week. First, I finished listening to Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke. I feel accomplished for completing this 1000+ page tome. I enjoyed it a lot even though it was slow at times. It always felt deliberate in the character progression, and all of it came together into a satisfying conclusion. Next, I read The House with the Golden Door by Elodie Harper. This sequel continued Amara’s story in a compelling look at life as a courtesan in ancient Rome. I didn’t love it quite as much as the first book, but it was still a heartbreaking and beautiful story of love, loss, and perseverance. Finally, I listened to The Sunbearer Trials by Aiden Thomas. I’ve been waiting for this book for what seems like forever. It was a fun mix of Mexican mythology, teen angst, and trials somewhat reminiscent of the Hunger Games. It also had fantastic trans rep that was a joy to read.

What was my favorite of the week? I don’t really have a favorite this week. I enjoyed all three of these books a great deal but for very different reasons. So, it’ll have to be a three-way tie.

What are you currently reading?

It is rare for me to read three books at once, but this week I am. I’m reading Ruination by Anthony Reynolds, which is the first book set in the League of Legends world. It is a great fantasy book, so far, and I’m looking forward to seeing where the story is headed. I’ve been waiting on my library hold of Beach Read by Emily Henry for weeks. It finally arrived yesterday, and I’ve already listened to half of it. I’m really liking the exploration of grief so far, and I’ll never turn down a grumpy/sunshine pairing with good banter, especially when the sunshine character is struggling with grumpiness themselves. Finally, I’m participating in a read-a-long of Sabriel by Garth Nix. This is a fascinating fantasy that promises to be a great coming-of-age story. It has necromancy and a talking cat. Need I say more?

What will you read next?

I’m going to continue to plow through my TBR with Notorious Sorcerer being first up. Then hopefully I’ll get to some of the books I missed reading last month…

I hope you’ve all had a great week! What have you been reading? Have you read any of these books? If so, what did you think? Let me know in the comments!

  1. Jonathan Strange has been on my TBR for what feels like forever at this point. I have a physical copy of it and ngl, it’s intimidating AF! 😂 Glad to hear that it was worth the journey though—I feel like those I hear talking about it love it lots but then I don’t hear it talked about so much. Beach Read is one that I’ve also heard great things about. I hope you enjoy all your reads!

    • It was definitely intimidating! And super slow. But I really liked the characters and the general classic feel of it. Beach Read was so good. Not as good as Book Lovers, but still really good. I absolutely recommend it!

      • I’ve been told repeatedly that Beach Read is so good and that I’ll probably love it that I’m kinda intimidated by it now 😂 Maybe 2022 will be the year I *finally* read it, LOL!

  2. The wasps in the walls is my literal nightmare, so I really hope the exterminator EXTERMINATES them soon!!!! And I’m so glad you’re joining in on the Sabriel read-a-long! It’s great to see so many new people discover her for the first time.

    • It appears they might now be exterminated. If not, I might need to track down a Dalek to get the job done right… Sabriel has been great so far! I’m enjoying it a lot and am curious to see where it is all headed.

  3. The wasp situation sounds serious and I hope that the exterminator can solve the problem for you quickly! I have a copy of The Sunbearer Trials that I need to get to soon. Happy reading!
