What did you read last?

This has been a really great week. All but one of my reads were 5-star books! I loved Path of Deceit, and it was the perfect introduction to the new phase of The High Republic. It had characters that made me think and illustrated the wild nature of the galaxy during this new time period being explored for the first time. Fence: Striking Distance was an adorable, super queer story. I loved all four of the main characters, and I was very invested in the will-they-or-won’t-they best friends to lovers romance. The ending left me feeling a bit cheated, though, because there wasn’t enough of a resolution. Foul Lady Fortune was superb. It was a fast-paced, twisty thrill ride through the intrigues of 1930’s Shanghai. I cannot recommend it enough! I have mixed thoughts on Captive Prince. I liked the writing and the compelling nature of the story, but all the violence felt like a bit much. There were so many beatings, floggings, and rapes that I lost count. I did enjoy the focus on political conspiracy at the end, and I was glued to the pages from the beginning despite the questionable content. I’m interested to see where the story goes next, but I’m also hesitant about the master/slave romance dynamic. So, we’ll see. Finally, I finished A Restless Truth yesterday. I was hesitant about this one because I don’t generally like when a series changes POVs for the second book. Something about it just feels like a bait and switch more often than not. Luckily, I was very wrong about this one. I LOVED it so much. If you like whodunnit stories or quests for magical items, you need to read this book. It is made even better by being super sapphic and occurring 100% on a boat. 🙂

What was my favorite of the week? There is no favorite this week. I enjoyed all of them, but Path of Deceit, Foul Lady Fortune, and A Restless Truth stood out a little from the rest.

What are you currently reading?

I’ve started listening to Prince’s Gambit, and I’m enjoying this one even more than the first because of its focus on political conspiracy and military tactics. I’m enjoying the romance more than I thought I would, but I’m still a little weirded out by the slave/master dynamic of it. I also started reading The Witch Haven, which I’m enjoying so far. The first few chapters have been super dramatic with two murders, an attempted rape, and the introduction of a magical school. I’m honestly not quite sure yet exactly what this book is supposed to be (murder mystery? class and gender oppression? dark academia?), and I’m not convinced yet that it does either.

What will you read next?

I plan to finish listening to the Captive Prince Trilogy and read my ARC of The Witch Hunt. Then I’m going to tackle the chonky Empire of the Vampire.
