What did you read last?
This has been a really rough week. We had to say goodbye to my best reading buddy. My cat, Cash, developed acute renal failure out of nowhere and had to be euthanized. Most of my week was spent going to and from the vet for her IV treatments, but in the end she wasn’t responsive to the treatments and was suffering horribly. Thank you to everyone who has already said kind words and offered condolences. It made a horrible day at least a little better. My wife also got some pretty troubling health news yesterday, but we won’t know more for a couple of weeks. So, cue the anxiety…
Anyway, enough about my horrible week. The bright spot has actually been my reading. I finished four books this week. The Wicked Day was an interesting conclusion to Mary Stewart’s Arthurian saga. Humanizing Mordred so much was a bold choice, but it didn’t work quite as well as it did for Merlin in the first three books. The ending felt like it was very inconsistent with the characterizations up to that point. It was still an enjoyable read, though, just not quite as enjoyable as the first three books. In the Lives of Puppets was the typical Klune genius. If you want to know all my thoughts, check out my review. External Forces was a pretty good follow-up to Innate Magic and improved considerably from the first book. I plan to have my review finished tomorrow. So, be on the lookout if you are interested in all my thoughts. Finally, I read the first volume of The Edge of Balance. I enjoyed this manga take on the High Republic even with its focus on the ridiculous Drengir.
What was my favorite of the week? Hands down In the Lives of Puppets. I loved this book so much. The sci fi elements mixed with Klune’s whimsy and the exploration of thought-provoking themes was just the perfect blend for me.
What are you currently reading?
I can’t tell you. I’m currently STRUGGLING to get through my last two BBNYA books. For whatever reason, I just cannot get into them. They are well-written. So, I’m thinking they are just not for me, which is really disappointing. 🙁
What will you read next?
I only completed one of my Reindeer Readathon prompts this week. So, I’m going to try to focus on those books next. Maybe Winter’s Orbit? I’ve only been wanting to read it for over a year. lol. I think it is time to finally get to it!

So sorry about cat Cash. It’s such a loss when a pet dies especially when it’s sudden.
Your feelings about Wicked Day echo mine completely. I just couldn’t accept the new version of Mordred. I really want to read Puppets too.
Thank you. It has definitely been a rough week. The Wicked Day was weird because I was completely on board with Mordred until almost the end. The “betrayal” just felt like it came out of nowhere and was shoehorned in because it had to be.
I’m so sorry that you’re having such a rough week. I hope whatever updates you’re waiting on for your wife end up being better than expected. Definitely a time to take it easy and do what makes you happy. Be kind to yourselves!
Hopefully it won’t take you too long to get through your last two BBNYA reads. Most of mine were pretty quick reads, which helped take the pressure off.
Thanks! This week has definitely been a horrible one, and I’m ready to put it in the rear-view mirror. As for BBNYA, I’ve only got the last half of my last book left, which I’m going to try to power through today. The second book grew on me, and I’m hoping this one will, as well. I don’t think I’m going to be a panelist again next year, though. Unfortunately, I haven’t really enjoyed it that much.
I liked most of the books in my rounds, but I’m having similar thoughts in that I also don’t think I’ll do it again next year. I found the pace a little stressful, particularly at the beginning. And it really just ate into my time to pleasure read, y’know? It was a good experience and I think it does boost indie authors, but I’m ready to focus more on the books I’ve purchased. I don’t have endless free time and I want to read the books I’ve already invested in, both money- and interest-wise. It kind of made me wish I was getting paid for this, lol. And I know it’s probably even busier at the organizer level, oof.
This is exactly my issue with it too. There’s already so many books I WANT to read that I’m having to force myself to read these instead. That’s no fun even when the books are good, and mine have been fine but not something I’d want to rave about.
