What did you read last?

Something Wild & Wonderful by Anita Kelly – 4.75 ⭐ – I loved this story and these characters so much! The mental health rep was really great, and I enjoyed the setting of them meeting and falling in love on the hiking trail. Both of the main characters were so clueless at first, and it was entertaining watching their relationship grow. The story handled some deep topics, such as how to rebuild one’s life after being rejected by the most important people in your life, in a really moving way, and I appreciated how well the personal growth was inter-weaved with the romance.

I Have Some Questions for You by Rebecca Makkai – 4⭐ – I liked this murder mystery. Following the clues was fun, and I liked the boarding school setting. It had a great ambiance to it. I didn’t really like the main character that much, but I appreciated the complexity of the character and the points her character was meant to illustrate. The author touched on so many relevant topics, but she never really explored them with depth. It seemed almost like she included a laundry list of buzz-worthy issues for the sake of having them, and it made the book feel a little too busy. The ending was realistic but also underwhelming, and I just really wanted a different outcome.

Untethered Sky by Fonda Lee – 5⭐ – I instantly became connected to these characters and found the world to be intriguing. There were plenty of moments that ripped my heart out despite this being relatively short as a novella. I’d love to see other stories set in this world and hope the author comes back to it in the future. See my review!

A Witch’s Guide to Fake Dating a Demon by Sarah Hawley – 4⭐ – This was laugh out loud hilarious. The title really tells you all you need to know. A struggling witch with self-esteem issues accidentally summons a demon to sell her soul. They are stuck together until the deal is made. The problem? She doesn’t actually want to give away her soul. This leads to plenty of forced proximity and fake dating turning into real feelings. I loved it!

Exo by Fonda Lee – 4.25⭐ – I wanted more Lee after finishing her new novella. So, I decided to dive into her backlist with this dystopian YA sci fi novel. Unsurprisingly, I liked it a lot. My only qualms were I wished we got a bit more of the aliens, and there were places in the middle where things did drag a bit. Based on the ending, I’m hopeful there will be more alien action in the sequel, and I did really enjoy all the tech and commentary on systemic oppression in this novel. Bring on the next one! 🙂

A Gathering of Shadows by V.E. Schwab – 3.5⭐ – I expected to love this one, and I just didn’t. It suffered horribly from second book syndrome, and the female protagonist became super powerful very quickly because the plot demanded it. I liked the new pirate character, but he just seemed superfluous by the end. I don’t know. This one just wasn’t firing on all cylinders for me. I hope the final book in the trilogy can redeem it.

Into the Light by Mark Oshiro – 5⭐ – I’m honestly not quite sure what I think about this one yet. I finished it last night and am still processing it. I hope to have my review finished tomorrow. So, be sure to check back.

What was my favorite of the week? My favorite novel of the week was Into the Light by Mark Oshiro. I just cannot stop thinking about it, and it left me in such a weird mood.

What are you currently reading?

The Battle of Jedha by George Mann (39%) – I’m reading the script of this audio drama because I had a hard time following the full cast audio. I’m enjoying the script so far, and I feel like I have a deeper understanding of what is going on than I did when listening to the audio.

A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas (42%) – I’m slowly making my way through this buddy read with Celeste. I’m still enjoying it so far, but I’m ready for things to kick off and this war to finally start. I like the character interactions, but all the planning is getting a bit dull.

Right Where I Left You by Julian Winters (17%) – I just started this last night, and I’m enjoying it so far. I relate to the main character with all his social awkwardness and love for comic books. 🙂

What will you read next?

I have an ARC and two library books to get to this week. I’m looking forward to all of them because I’ve seen good things about them.
