What did you read last?

The Battle of Jedha by George Mann – 4⭐ – This was technically a re-read since I listened to the audio drama a couple months ago. I had some difficulty following the story and character motivations while listening to it. So, I decided to read the script before making my final judgment about the story. I liked reading it in this format better. I had no problem understanding what was going on, and it was actually quite an exciting story that sets up the last couple books of this part of the High Republic really well. I loved Keth and found myself attached to him really quickly. This phase of the High Republic has no qualms with killing off new and integral characters alike, and this script had some moments that made me tear up.

A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas – 4.25⭐ – I finally finished my buddy read of this with Celeste. As with the second book, I loved the found family and the character interactions. The addition of Lucien to their little circle was a pleasant surprise. The planning session with all the high Lords (and Lady) was probably my favorite thing about this book. It introduced so many great new characters while also giving space for some massive confrontations that needed to happen. The book did drag in spots because of all the planning, but it came together spectacularly with plenty of action at the end.

Right Where I Left You by Julian Winters – 4⭐ – This was a cute queer YA coming of age story. It had a best friends to lovers subplot, but the main focus was on the main character’s struggle to make friends and overcome his social anxiety. There was plenty of teen angst and a sort of love triangle just to gum up the works a bit. I adored the main character and identified heavily with his social awkwardness and love for comic books. Overall, it was another enjoyable, diverse story by Winters. If you’ve liked his previous work, you’ll probably enjoy this too.

The Left-Handed Booksellers of London by Garth Nix – 4⭐ – I don’t know what else to say about this one other than it was a ton of fun to read. It was fast-paced with fascinating world-building and larger than life characters. I love urban fantasy stories where the protagonist is dragged into a secret world of magic/supernatural stuff, and this book utilized that trope really well. I’ve already got the sequel on hold at the library and cannot wait to get it.

Play the Fool by Lina Chern – 3⭐ – This was a solid murder mystery. I found it to be a bit predictable and unbelievable, though. So, I didn’t end up loving it. See my review!

All Systems Red by Martha Wells – 5⭐ – I loved this novella so much. Murderbot was so full of personality, and the story was fast-paced and interesting. I will definitely be picking up the next story in this series. If you are looking for a short, fun sci fi story, I definitely recommend this one.

Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid – 5⭐ – This book took me by surprise. I decided to read it to fulfill a POPSUGAR prompt and didn’t expect to love it. I totally get all the hype. This story was brimming with emotion and had complex, messy characters. I kept thinking to myself that this band and these people had to be real, but nope. The author was just that good at making them so realistic that my brain couldn’t accept this was fiction. I didn’t love the story structure at first, but it definitely grew on me. Eventually, I really loved and appreciated the approach because all of the different perspectives from each interviewee added so much to the story. The full cast audiobook was perfect for capitalizing on this style of storytelling, and I definitely recommend listening to it. I’m not sure I would have liked this as much if I’d read the print copy. The narrators added so much emotion, and I cannot praise them enough for the wonderful job they did with this story.

On or Off Vol. 3 by A1 – 4.5⭐ – I loved this volume of the story. I liked the increased focus on Director Kang and enjoyed seeing his perspective on the awkwardness at the office. I wish they had gotten together a little quicker, but I did enjoy the angst of them both being oblivious. Overall, it was a great new installment, and I cannot wait to get my hands on the fourth volume in the summer.

What was my favorite of the week? My favorite of the week was Daisy Jones & The Six. I was just completely absorbed by this audiobook and loved every minute of it. I’ve even started watching the TV adaptation. lol.

What are you currently reading?

Spear by Nicola Griffith (27%) – This is a fascinating re-telling of the Arthurian legend. I’m loving the beautiful prose and the unique story choices so far.

The Queer Principles of Kit Webb by Cat Sebastian (30%) – This story is so much fun. If you enjoy queer historical romance, I definitely recommend giving it a shot.

What will you read next?

I have an ARC and two library books to get to this week. I’m looking forward to all of them because I’ve seen good things about them.
