What did you read last?

Spear by Nicola Griffith – 4.5⭐ – I loved this Arthurian re-telling. I enjoyed how it centered the old Celtic versions of the characters and some aspects of the legend I hadn’t heard before. It was also super queer and inclusive, with an Arthur, Gwen, & Lance throuple. What’s not to love?! 🙂 One of my favorite things about the book, though, was the extra information included in the back matter that explained the history of the legends and how the author used the info to craft this particular story.

The Queer Principles of Kit Webb by Cat Sebastian – 4.25⭐ – This was such a fun historical MM romance. I absolutely adored the two main characters, a retired criminal who runs a coffee shop and the entitled son of a duke who wants to hire someone to steal something from his awful father. They were a match made in heaven. lol. There were also plenty of secrets, intrigue, and a heist gone wrong. It all came together to make for a hilarious, hot, and entertaining story.

Brave Face by Shaun David Hutchinson – 5⭐ – This memoir was incredibly moving and left me in tears for a bit. It was about teenage Shaun’s struggle with accepting his gay identity, coming out, and struggling with depression and suicidal ideation. It was super heavy at times, but it never felt overwhelming despite some difficult topics. The story also provided a hopeful message for teens that may be struggling with these issues today. I definitely recommend the audiobook since it was read by the author. He did a fantastic job with it.

A Complicated Love Story Set in Space by Shaun David Hutchinson – 4.75⭐ – This story was absolutely wild. I had no idea what was going on most of the time, and I enjoyed trying to figure it out alongside the characters. Then the twist happened, and it absolutely blew my mind and changed the way I thought about everything that came before in the story. It was so smart, and I think it’s probably one of my favorite twists I’ve ever read. The ending resolved things a little too quickly, though, but this was definitely a fun read.

Blood Debts by Terry J. Benton-Walker – 3.5⭐ – I didn’t love this one quite as much as I wanted to, but it was still a good read and a solid start to a new series. I just wish there hadn’t been so much going on. While reading, you could just feel the author setting up the entire series rather than just focusing on the story of this book. You can read all my thoughts in my review.

Scattered Showers by Rainbow Rowell – 4.5⭐ – This was a great collection of (mostly) holiday short stories. I liked them all and thought a few of them were actually really creative, especially the last story. Of course, I adored the new Simon Snow story and recommend all fans pick this up just for that story. lol.

What was my favorite of the week? My favorite of the week was A Complicated Love Story Set in Space. The lightbulb moment when everything became clear just made my week. So, it had to be the favorite.

What are you currently reading?

A Conjuring of Light by V.E. Schwab (27%) – I’m enjoying this book much more than its predecessor so far. Although, I’m a bit skeptical about the characters leaving London to go on an adventure while it is occupied by the dark magic. I’m afraid it will change the tone and pace of the book to shift setting so much part of the way through the story, but we’ll see.

Bitter Medicine by Mia Tsai (10%) – I just started this one, but I’m enjoying it so far. It definitely has me wanting to learn more about the main characters.

Spell Bound F. T. Lukens (8%) – I’m so excited to finally have my hands on this book. I’m not too far into it, but I’m loving it so far. The first couple of chapters are giving me major Rules & Regulations vibes, and I’m curious to see where the story will go.

What will you read next?

I went on a bit of a shopping spree yesterday and picked up the new High Republic book and the new Olivie Blake release. So, of course I’ve got to get to those next. I also have a queer YA ARC I need to read. Those will be the priority this week.
