The Never Have I Ever Book Tag

Hello, everyone! It has been quite some time since I’ve done a book tag. Dini from dinipandareads was kind enough to tag me in this one. So, I thought I’d give it a go.

THE RULES

  • Link back to the original creator: Madame Writer
  • Link back to the person who tagged you (Dini)
  • Answer all prompts.
  • Add one more prompt of your own.
  • Tag at least five people.
  • Don’t lie!
  • Have fun.

NEVER HAVE I EVER: Read a later book in a series before the first

I don’t think I’ve done this. I’m usually a stickler for reading order. The only thing I can think of would be reading OCEAN’S ECHO before WINTER’S ORBIT, but those are technically standalones set within the same universe.

NEVER HAVE I EVER: Burned a book

I think doing this would seriously hurt my soul. lol. I cringe anytime one of my books gets slight damage. I cannot even imagine myself burning one.

NEVER HAVE I EVER: Gone into a shop to buy one book and come out with many more…

🤣🤣🤣 Is this prompt serious? Of course I’ve done this. It happens almost every time I go into a bookstore. I’m honestly surprised my wife still lets me go into one unsupervised. Our bank account always suffers.

NEVER HAVE I EVER: Loved a book when I was younger and hated it when I was older

I cannot think of anything that fits this description. I haven’t re-read much stuff from childhood except for a few absolute favorites. I’m sure I’d find some stuff a bit childish now, but I’d probably still enjoy it because of the nostalgia.

NEVER HAVE I EVER: Read a book I knew I’d hate

Why would I do this to myself? I try to only pick stuff I will probably like. I have no interest in making myself suffer needlessly. lol.

NEVER HAVE I EVER: Wrote a fanfiction about my favorite book

I’ve thought about writing fanfiction but never gave it a serious effort. I lose focus too quickly for it to get anywhere, and there is just too much stuff already written that I want to read to spend a ton of time writing my own stuff. Maybe that will change one day. We’ll see…

NEVER HAVE I EVER: Dressed up as my favorite literary characters

So, I’ve never dressed up as literary characters, per se. However, I have dressed up as the 11th Doctor and Kylo Ren. They are movie and TV characters, but they also appear in books from the Doctor Who and Star Wars franchises, as well.

NEVER HAVE I EVER: Hated a book by an author I love

Nothing comes to mind for this one. It takes a lot for me to hate a book. There are plenty that I don’t enjoy but very few I actively hate. As for authors I love, I typically have a favorite book or series from them. I cannot think of an author whose entire catalogue is something I’m obsessed with.

NEVER HAVE I EVER: Skim read a book

Um. I do this quite often, especially if the book is good but not great. I want to know what happens but don’t want to put in all the work of actually focusing on all the prose. lol. I have a tendency to do this a lot when the prose is dense or too flowery.

NEVER HAVE I EVER: Pretended to read a book when I haven’t

I’m sure I’ve probably done this for school. I cannot think of any specific book, but I know it has happened. 😬 Hopefully none of my old teachers follow this blog.

NEVER HAVE I EVER: Read a book without a dust cover

I don’t ever read books without their dust cover. I typically leave them on and use the flaps of the cover as a bookmark.

NEVER HAVE I EVER: Had a book boyfriend/girlfriend

I mean, not really. I was super obsessed with the Darkling when I first read SHADOW AND BONE, though. I think that was mostly because I was picturing him as Ben Barnes. lol. There have been plenty of other characters that I’m attracted to while reading but none that stick out. I usually obsess over the character and their relationships, but I don’t really ever picture myself with them, if that makes sense.

NEVER HAVE I EVER: Picked up a book based on the cover alone

I think it is safe to say that I usually pick all of my books, or at least most of them, based on whether I like the cover. It is super rare for me to buy a physical book for my shelves if I don’t like the cover. In general, I love to browse, both online and in stores, and the cover is definitely what initially draws me to a book.

NEVER HAVE I EVER: Read the end of a book before the beginning

Nope. I’ve never done this, and I don’t want to do this. lol.

NEVER HAVE I EVER: Read a history or anthropology book for fun

I’m a huge nerd. So, of course I’ve done this. I’ve read a ton of history nonfiction books and textbooks for fun. It has been a while since I’ve picked up a textbook, but I’ve definitely done it. Most recently I read THE DARK QUEENS, which was a nonfiction book about two Frankish queens in the Middle Ages. It was a great read.

NEVER HAVE I EVER: Participated in a readathon

I participate in SO MANY READATHONS. Right now I’m wrapping up my reading for Trope-ical Readathon, which happens every March and August. I also love participating in the Magical Readathon (April & August), May the Force Read With You Readathon (May), Reindeer Readathon (December), and Mythothon. I doubt I’ll do all of these this year because I’m getting a bit burnt out, but I’ll definitely be participating in Magical Readathon next month.

NEVER HAVE I EVER: Bought multiple books in a series before starting it

I’m really horrible about doing this. If I see a lot of love for a series from people I trust, I will often buy the entire series up front. Luckily, I haven’t been steered wrong yet, but I also have a lot more series to read. lol. Some examples of series I’ve bought all at once include ACOTAR, The Magicians, and the Shadowhunter books.

NEVER HAVE I EVER: Filled up an entire bookshelf and had to have stacks of books balanced precariously throughout various rooms

I don’t usually leave books lying around the house because I’m too afraid they will get damaged. If I fill up a bookshelf, I usually just go buy another one. 😆 Comic books, on the other hand, are a different story. I have stacks of them everywhere, but at least they are in their protective sleeves.

NEVER HAVE I EVER: Hurt a book (e.g. accidentally spilled ice cream or coffee on it, dog-eared a book, etc.)

I’ve spilled stuff on books before by accident when I was younger, but I’m super careful with my books now. I would never dog-ear a book. Just thinking about it makes me cringe.

NEVER HAVE I EVER: Loved the movie/tv series more than the book??

I’m pretty much always on team book. I enjoy adaptations too, but they rarely match or surpass what I’ve imagined in my head while reading.

NEVER HAVE I EVER: Re-read a book I didn’t enjoy hoping that the “second time’s a charm”

I’ve never done this and don’t have plans to do it in the future. Life is too short to spend time re-reading things I didn’t like. Maybe I’ll like it more the second time around, but I’d rather give that chance to something new.

MY PROMPT – NEVER HAVE I EVER: Sold an ARC

I see tons of these on Pango and other marketplaces, and it blows my mind that people will sell ARCs. It clearly says they shouldn’t be sold, usually on the cover. The author made no money from that book, and it just feels wrong to make money off someone else’s work and creativity when they did not earn anything from that copy.

I’M TAGGING…

If you’ve already done it or don’t want to participate, no worries. Anyone else that wants to participate is more than welcome, as well. Just remember to link back so I can see your answers. 🙂

  1. Thanks for the tag. However, our responses are going to be so similar that I’m not sure I need to do it. We agree on so many points!!
I did used to have stacks of books around the house though, if there was an unoccupied corner in a room, it would almost certainly have a pile of books in it. Then we created our book room and the problem was solved.

    • You’re welcome! I’m glad we agree on so much. lol. One of the reasons I’ve never really left books lying around is we have an indoor rabbit. He loves to chew on stuff when we don’t watch him closely. So, any paper, wood, cardboard, or unprotected chords are always at risk of destruction with him around.

    • That sounds like so much fun! I’ve always loved Kylo’s helmet design and lightsaber, which is why I chose him. The costume is super hot, though, with all the layers in all black. So, I haven’t worn it in forever.

      • His helmet is pretty cool, for sure. I told the kids since they didn’t want to dress up for Halloween, the hubs and I are going to renew our vows for our 25th anniversary and it will be Star Wars themed. lol Only 2 years to go!

  2. I enjoyed reading your answers and I like your new question! I find it so frustrating when I find or hear of people selling ARCs when you’re not supposed to be doing it and it’s like, such a privilege to receive it and there they go trying to make profit off it? People can be so frustrating 😤

    • I know!!! The prices they sell them at are absolutely ridiculous too. I’ve seen people list them for hundreds of dollars, which is ridiculous because its a damn proof not a collector’s item. smh.
