WWW Wednesday (22) – October 5, 2022

Hello, everyone! It’s Wednesday! That means it is time for another WWW Wednesday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words. I’ll be answering the following questions:

  1. What did you read last?
  2. What are you currently reading?
  3. What will you read next?

What did you read last?

This week has flown by, but I got lots of reading done. I finished listening to Portrait of a Thief. It provided an interesting message about colonialism, especially as it relates to art, but the characters just felt redundant. It seemed like I was reading the same thing over and over again. Unfortunately, Daughter of Sparta and Blood of Troy weren’t much better. The writing in Daughter of Sparta was a bit rough, and Blood of Troy squandered what could have been a great story by having a mess of an ending. There were plenty of great ideas and fun twists on mythology, but the execution of the story was lacking. Jack’s on Fire was such a cute story about first love and the power of acceptance to help heal past wounds. It reminded me a bit of Heartstopper with its sweet high school romance and focus on mental health. Finally, I listened to Neon Gods. I did not realize going into it that a majority of this book was smut. lol. Luckily, I wasn’t around anyone when I found out or it would have been a bit embarrassing. This take on Olympus was interesting, and I would have liked to learn more about it and how it related to the rest of the world. The plot was a good re-imagining of Persephone’s story with Hades, but the story and characters seemed overshadowed by all the sex, which honestly got a bit repetitive after a while.

What was my favorite of the week? My favorite this week was Jack’s on Fire by Owen Lach. It was just such a cute, sweet story that made me smile. My review will be available tomorrow (hopefully).

What are you currently reading?

I started reading Foul Lady Fortune by Chloe Gong. I’ve only read a chapter or two, but I’m enjoying it so far. I’ve set it down to read the new Star Wars book, though. I’m loving Path of Deceit so far and have almost finished it after picking it up yesterday.

What will you read next?

I’ll be pouncing on The First to Die at the End after I finish my current reads, which I’m VERY excited about. Then I plan to read some library books, starting with Fence: Striking Distance.

I hope you’ve all had a great week! What have you been reading? Have you read any of these books? If so, what did you think? Let me know in the comments!

  1. That’s a lot of reading!! Awesome. I started laughing out loud when I got to the Neon Gods part. I can imagine it was quite the shock to you! I have that on my TBR cart somewhere. lol I just got Foul Lady Fortune in and I can’t wait to read it. I hope we both enjoy it!!

    My WWW!

    • I was definitely shocked at first, and then it got a bit repetitive after a while. Although, the female narrator was cracking me up with her voice for Hades. It was really gravelly but not very deep, and going at 1.75 speed it sounded like Hades was a wicked chipmunk with a kink fetish. LOL. I hope we both enjoy Foul Lady Fortune too. I’m getting back into it now that I’ve finished the Star Wars book. The premise seems really cool so far.

  2. Oop, listening to Neon Gods not knowing it’s a *very* sexy read 😂🙈 I can’t imagine! Katee Robert’s books are very sexy, haha, so I guess you know now moving forward. I enjoyed Neon Gods but I do agree that the sex does overshadow most of the other stuff. I love the take on the lore though especially the council of Gods and all! Also, I didn’t know Fence had a novel. I love the GN. I hope you enjoy it and the rest of these reads!

    • Yeah. I didn’t really know much about the book going into it other than it was a Hades & Persephone retelling. I knew it was popular and saw the library had the audiobook. So, I thought I’d give it a shot. Now I know why it is popular. Sex sells. LOL. I really liked its take on the lore too, and I didn’t mind all the sex. I just wasn’t expecting it. 😳 I didn’t know Fence had a novel either until I saw it while browsing the library. I’ve wanted to read the GN for a while but haven’t gotten around to it.
