Hello, everyone! It’s Wednesday! That means it is time for another WWW Wednesday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words. I’ll be answering the following questions:
- What did you read last?
- What are you currently reading?
- What will you read next?
What did you read last?
Silver Nitrate by Silvia Moreno-Garcia – 4.5β – I always love Moreno-Garcia’s work, and this book was no exception. If you like horror/thriller stories, be sure to check this one out. It was captivating and atmospheric with relatable characters. See all my thoughts in my review!
Dark Water Daughter by H. M. Long – 3.75β – I liked this one and definitely understand all the hype. The magic and other aspects of the world-building were really cool, and the pace of the adventure constantly kept things moving in interesting directions. The main characters were likable, and I thought it was smart to have the two of them separated for a lot of the story. It allowed different vantage points that eventually came together in the end. My only real complaint was that I didn’t feel super connected to the main characters. I could feel that they were largely plot devices rather than getting to really know them as people, but I still enjoyed the story regardless.
The City of Dusk by Tara Sim – 4β – This re-read was a lot of fun. I really like the characters in this book, and the mysteries were intriguing. The story still felt bloated, though, and there were times it seemed like it didn’t make sense because things got so convoluted, which is saying something considering I’d already read the book. lol. It was still a good time, though, and I’m now super pumped for sequel.
Magic’s Pawn by Mercedes Lackey – 3.75β – This book had ALL THE TRAUMA. It started with Vanyel coping with his shitty family before being exiled for being too different. Once he started living with his aunt, I thought it’d be a cute book about him healing from his family trauma and coming to accept himself and the love he deserves. I WAS WRONG. This poor boy went through some things, and I just wanted to give him all the hugs. πππ

What are you currently reading?
Amari and the Night Brothers by B. B. Alston (60%) – I’ve had my eye on this middle grade book for a while and jumped on the opportunity to buddy read it with Dini. It is SO GOOD. I love the main character and her friends, and I’m honestly so invested in Amari’s search for her missing brother. The world-building is super cool, and I’m enjoying the Men in Black vibes and her time spent training at the ‘summer camp.’
Mimic Arcanist by Shami Stovall (17%) – I enjoyed the first book in this series and was very excited to see my library had the second book on audio. The writing and character dynamics are similar to the first book so far. Twain is still my favorite sarcastic kitten ever, and I like that the setting has shifted a bit. The characters are still in school, but they’ve gone on a camping trip field expedition to a far corner of the civilization. I’m looking forward to seeing what mischief they manage while out in the wilderness.
A Crooked Mark by Linda Kao (50%) – I almost skipped this book because I had to return it to the library before getting to it. I’m glad I decided to put my Kindle on airplane mode so that I could hold on to it until I was finished. lol. The premise is so fascinating. The main character is on his first solo mission to determine whether a teenage girl has been infected with the mark of Lucifer. If he determines she has the mark, he must BURN HER ALIVE to keep the evil from spreading. As he investigates her, he begins to have feelings for her and starts to question everything he has ever been taught. Have he and his secret society been the true monsters all along?

What will you read next?

The Midnight Kingdom by Tara Sim, Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston, The Three-Body Problem by Cixin Liu
I hope you’ve all had a great week! What have you been reading? Have you read any of these books? If so, what did you think? Let me know in the comments!
Omg, you’re ahead of me in Amari! I was slowing down cos I wasn’t sure where you were but now I’m gonna pick it back up again asap π I’m so glad you’re loving it and I’m so glad I’m re-reading it cos hindsight is everything! I can’t wait to hear what you think, lol. Also can’t wait to see what you think of Mimic Arcanist! Happy reading π
Oh no! I didn’t send any messages yesterday because my day was pretty busy and kind of awful, but I did keep reading. I’ll slack off a bit so that we can get back in sync. I’m somewhere around 70% now I think.
I have Midnight Kingdom to read this month as well but think that I definitely need to reread City of Dusk first. Vanyel has got to be one of my favourite ever characters but Mercedes Lackey certainly makes him suffer over the trilogy. I’m not sure that she could write the books now as there would be so many trigger warnings.
I’m seriously worried about what will happen to him in the next two books. He has already suffered enough for multiple lifetimes, and he’s only a teenager. lol.
Magicβs Promise isnβt too bad. π
Holy hell, I should avoid coming around your blog. You always have way too many books I could be interested in. Why do you do that? But I definitely have to check some of your books out.
And hell, why aren’t we friends yet on Goodreads? I sent you a request. π
