Hello, everyone! It’s Wednesday! That means it is time for another WWW Wednesday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words. I’ll be answering the following questions:
- What did you read last?
- What are you currently reading?
- What will you read next?
What did you read last?
Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse – 3.75⭐ – I’ve had this book on my TBR forever, and I’m glad that I finally picked it up. It was a great mix of familiar fantasy tropes set within an indigenous culture. I loved the political scheming of the priests and all of the fascinating history that served as the foundation of the story’s events. My favorite character was the boat captain. She had a lovably roguish personality, and her powers and mysterious past had me hooked. I didn’t love the romance in this one, though. It felt a bit too forced. Overall, it was a great start to the series, and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next.
Infinity Alchemist by Kacen Callender – DNF – I DNFd this one at 53%, which is a shame because I had such high hopes for it. The premise was quite intriguing, and I loved all the queer rep. The quest for the book just wasn’t enough to hold my interest, especially since it just seemed to entail the characters staring at each other until they figured out where to look for it. Yes. I do mean they literally stared at each other until it came to them in some sort of vision. The romance was also distractingly instalove. So, I gave up, mostly out of boredom, to avoid putting myself in a slump once reading this one started feeling like a chore.
The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett – ??⭐ – I’m not quite sure what to rate this one yet, but I know it will be high. It was a great mix of mystery and fantasy, and the world-building had me absolutely hooked on this story. It left me desperate to know more about pretty much everything, and I can see it ending up in my list of favorites at the end of the year.

What are you currently reading?
The Wonder Engine by T. Kingfisher (75%) – I’ve been enjoying this sequel even more than book one. Where book one was more of a quest story, this one is more mystery and heist. The group of characters is still wonderful, and their dynamic makes for really entertaining reading.
My Fair Brady by Brian D. Kennedy (50%) – I loved Kennedy’s first book, A Little Bit Country, and I’m enjoying this one, too. It’s got theatre, teen drama, and a great perspective on social anxiety. I’ve finished half of the book in one day. It is really easy to read and was just the break I needed from the heavier fantasy I’ve recently read.
Swann’s Way by Marcel Proust (18%) – I didn’t make any progress on this one in the past week. I’m hoping to read more of it this week after I finish up another ARC or two…

What will you read next?

The Trials of Empire by Richard Swan, Fevered Star by Rebecca Roanhorse, Evergreen by Devin Greenlee
I hope you’ve all had a great week! What have you been reading? Have you read any of these books? If so, what did you think? Let me know in the comments!
That’s crazy they were just sitting around waiting for the book to appear! lol Hopefully you have better books coming up!
Yeah. They would sit and stare at each other to sync up and reach some sort of higher plane in the hopes that someone there would tell them where the book was at. It just wasn’t that great. lol.
Oh no, I cringe reading what you wrote about the romance in Infinity Alchemist. That… Really doesn’t sound great. What a shame! 😭 I didn’t know Kennedy had another YA contemporary coming out but I also really enjoyed A Little Bit Country so I’m keen to see what you’ll think of this. Hope you have a great week of reading ahead!
Yeah. I struggled with Infinity Alchemist because I wanted to like it so bad. I just did not. At all. lol.
As for Kennedy’s new book, I loved it. It was cute and had plenty of teen angst. I appreciated the social anxiety rep and the main character’s journey to figuring out that he didn’t need to become someone else to fit in and be happy. He just needed the confidence to be himself.
