Magical Readathon Spring Equinox 2024

The start of April means it is time again for one of my favorite readathons, Magical Readathon. Classes at Orilium resume today, and my character has the month to try to get good grades while also maybe going on some side quests. We’ll see how motivated he is… lol. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, you can find more information about the Magical Readathon in this term’s announcement video. Now let’s jump into some character background and the books I hope to read to satisfy my course requirements this month.

Character Background

Name: Padwin O’Sohkan
Guild: The Mind Walkers
Background: Urban
Province: Darkmeadow
Heritage: Iltirian
Conduit: Staff
Legacy: Astral Plane

Padwin has spent the last two years at Orilium studying to become a dream walker, which means he’s earned the level of apprentice. In general, he’s always been a pretty shy person since he grew up roaming the shelves of the Great Underworld Library of Darkmeadow. He’s interested in understanding people, though, and his time at Orilium and his dream walker studies have helped him be more comfortable around others. He believes that he still has much to learn about the mind and has decided to spend this year studying the calling of mind mender. He thinks it will pair well with his dream walker skills and fits his interests in psychology. He’s not sure if he will ever want to work as a mender/healer, but he is more open to the possibility than he was at the beginning of his educational journey. To learn more about Padwin’s past and the prompts that created him, see my character introduction post.

Orilium Spring Equinox Classes, Prompts, & TBR

In order to embark on his studies to become a mind mender, Padwin must take five classes this spring: alchemy, spells & incantations, psionics & divination, restoration, and demonology. I’ve managed to narrow down the books I’m going to read to finish each class, but, as always, they are subject to change without notice. lol.

Alchemy: Transmutation circles – Circle on the cover

Night of the Witch by Sara Raasch & Beth Revis

A witch and a hunter. Vengeance is their mission. Love is their destiny.

Fritzi is a witch. A survivor of a brutal attack on her coven, she’s determined to find her only surviving family member and bring the hexenjägers—zealot witch hunters—to justice for the lives they ended. To do this, she will need to take down their leader—Kommandant Dieter Kirch.

Otto is a hexenjäger and a captain, the second in command to Dieter Kirch—but that’s just his cover. Years ago, the hexenjagers burned his innocent mother alive and since then, he has been planning a move against the witch hunters that tore his family apart. And now the time has come for them to pay for what they’ve done.

When Fritzi and Otto are unexpectedly thrown together, neither is sure they can trust the other, despite their common enemy. But all they have is one another, and they both crave revenge. As truths come to light and trust shifts, Fritzi and Otto uncover a far more horrifying plot at the center of the hexenjäger attacks . . . but their own growing feelings for each other may be the most powerful magic of all.

Psionics & Divination: Clairsentience 2 – Prediction bingo

The Perfect Guy Doesn’t Exist by Sophie Gonzales

A fanfic writer brings her favorite TV character to life in this friends-to-enemies-to-lovers novel full of humor and heart.

Ivy Winslow has the house to herself for a week while her parents are away. She’s planning to use this newfound freedom to binge-watch her favorite fantasy TV show, H-MAD, and hang out with her best friend, Henry. She’ll also have to avoid her former best friend-turned enemy (and neighbor), Mack. But things quickly go awry when Ivy wakes up to find Weston, the gorgeous, very fictional main character of H-MAD in her bedroom, claiming to be her soul mate.

Ivy realizes that her fanfic writing has somehow brought Weston as she’s imagined him to life. But it turns out that the tropes she swoons over in her stories are slightly less romantic in reality, and her not-so-fictional crush is causing some real-world problems. To figure out why Weston is here and what to do with him, Ivy decides to team up with Henry and (against her better judgment) Mack. But with Mack back in her life, Ivy starts to wonder if Weston, her “perfect guy”, is the one who’s truly perfect for her . . . or if that was someone else all along.

Restoration: Regaining Consciousness – Book you think could cure slumps

The Emperor and the Endless Palace by Justinian Huang

“What if I told you that the feeling we call love is actually the feeling of metaphysical recognition, when your soul remembers someone from a previous life?”

In the year 4 BCE, an ambitious courtier is called upon to seduce the young emperor—but quickly discovers they are both ruled by blood, sex and intrigue.

In 1740, a lonely innkeeper agrees to help a mysterious visitor procure a rare medicine, only to unleash an otherworldly terror instead.

And in present-day Los Angeles, a college student meets a beautiful stranger and cannot shake the feeling they’ve met before.

Across these seemingly unrelated timelines woven together only by the twists and turns of fate, two men are reborn, lifetime after lifetime. Within the treacherous walls of an ancient palace and the boundless forests of the Asian wilderness to the heart-pounding cement floors of underground rave scenes, our lovers are inexplicably drawn to each other, constantly tested by the worlds around them.

As their many lives intertwine, they begin to realize the power of their undying love—a power that transcends time itself…but one that might consume them both.

An unpredictable roller coaster of a debut novel, The Emperor and the Endless Palace is a genre-bending romantasy that challenges everything we think we know about true love.

Demonology: Pacts & contracts – Book you did not pay for

The Hemlock Queen by Hannah Whitten

In the second installment of New York Times bestselling author Hannah Whitten’s lush, romantic epic fantasy series, a young woman who can raise the dead must navigate the dangerous and glamorous world of the Sainted King’s royal court.

The corrupt king August is dead. Prince Bastian has seized the throne and raised Lore—a necromancer and former smuggler—to his right hand side. Together they plan to cut out the rot from the heart of the sainted court and help the people of Dellaire. But not everyone is happy with the changes. The nobles are sowing dissent, the Kyrithean Empire is beating down their door, and Lore’s old allies are pulling away. Even Prince Bastian’s changed. No longer the hopeful, rakish, charismatic man Lore knows and loves, instead he’s reckless, domineering and cold.

And something’s been whispering in her ear. A voice, dark and haunting, that’s telling her there’s more to the story than she knows and more to her power than she can even imagine. A truth buried deep that could change everything.

With Bastian’s coronation fast approaching and enemies whispering on all sides, Lore must figure out how to protect herself, her prince, and her country before they all come crumbling down and whatever dark power has been creeping through the catacombs is unleashed.

Are any of these books on your TBR? Have you already read them? If so, what did you think? Let me know down in the comments!

  1. I hope you enjoy your picks! I have my tbr figured out but I haven’t posted yet lol.

    • Oh, good. I’ve seen some negative reviews saying it is really slow. I really liked the first book, though. So, I’m still holding out hope I’ll enjoy it. I’m glad you are liking it, and that makes me feel more optimistic.
