WWW Wednesday (100) – June 5, 2024

Hello, everyone! It’s Wednesday! That means it is time for another WWW Wednesday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words. I’ll be answering the following questions:

  1. What did you read last?
  2. What are you currently reading?
  3. What will you read next?

What did you read last?

Twelfth Knight by Alexene Farol Follmuth – 4⭐ – I had a fun time with this one. The FMC was a bit intense, but I ended up really liking her by the end. I loved the incorporation of video games and role-playing games. The leads had a great antagonistic dynamic with plenty of chemistry. The story did get a bit preachy at times, but it worked for me because it fit with the personality of the main character. If you are looking for a short YA romcom where the nerd and the jock get together, I definitely recommend giving this book a shot.

Running Close to the Wind by Alexandra Rowland – ???⭐ – I still need to sit down and write my review for this book. So, I haven’t settled on a final rating for it yet. It is safe to say that I loved it, though. I laughed so much while reading this one. Do not go into this book expecting something serious because the story rarely takes itself very seriously and is full of sexual euphemisms and chaotic characters. The main character proudly considers himself a “silly little slut” for goodness sake. Pick this one up if you are looking for a completely unhinged queer pirate romp.

Death in the Spires by KJ Charles – 4.5⭐ – This was a great murder mystery. It kept me guessing, and I appreciated how my views on each character changed so much over the course of the story as new details emerged. There was a little bit of romance, but the story was definitely more focused on the mystery and uncovering the secrets of this friend group that was torn apart by the murder. I enjoyed piecing together the clues alongside the main character and never knew who to trust up until the very end.

What are you currently reading?

The Darkness Before Them by Matthew Ward (6%) – I’m not too far into this one, but I’m intrigued by the characters and the world-building. The magic system is really cool, and I want to know more about how the tattoos factor into it. So, I’m definitely looking forward to making more progress on this one soon.

Defy the Storm by Tessa Gratton & Justina Ireland (12%) – I finally picked this book up because the next book in The High Republic comes out soon, next week, I think. So, I need to catch up. Ireland’s Star Wars stories are hit or miss for me, and this one is a miss so far. It is a bit all over the place and has largely followed characters I really don’t like that much. I’m hoping it gets better. 🤞

What will you read next?

We Shall Be Monsters by Tara Sim, The Honey Witch by Sydney J. Shields, Abhorsen by Garth Nix

I hope you’ve all had a great week! What have you been reading? Have you read any of these books? If so, what did you think? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I’m really curious about Honey Witch. I ALMOST got that one but then held back! I hope it’s amazing because the cover is stunning, and then I’ll have to buy it. haha.

    • I’ve borrowed it from the library. It is okay so far. I related to the grief bit really easily, but the structure of the book is just a bit odd. I’m almost halfway into it, and the romance has only just barely started. There also seems to be a huge emphasis on finding one’s soul mate, which is not really a favorite trope of mine. We’ll see how I feel about it by the end…

      • Oh, good thing you borrowed it and didn’t buy it. I’ve been so stingy with my pre-orders lately. I don’t love the soul mate trope either… Maybe the ending helped!

  2. I’m glad you liked TWELFTH KNIGHT! I saw it in the bookstore today and thought about buying it. But even though I love that author’s adult books, I thought it might be best I stick to the library for her YA books. I’m looking forward to reading it when I get the time!
