Hello, everyone! It’s Wednesday! That means it is time for another WWW Wednesday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words. I’ll be answering the following questions:
- What did you read last?
- What are you currently reading?
- What will you read next?
What did you read last?
Subtle Blood by KJ Charles – 5⭐ – This was a great ending to the story of Will and Kim. I enjoyed this entire series, and I cannot recommend it enough for anyone looking for a great queer historical romance with a side of conspiracy and mystery.
We Shall Be Monsters by Tara Sim – 5⭐ – I loved this book so much. The Indian-inspired world-building and mythology were so fascinating, and the story had a tense edge to it that kept me hooked from the very first chapter. The horror elements were appropriately grotesque, and I appreciated the journey of the main character as she dealt with grief, guilt, and the loneliness of being ostracized for being different. I cannot recommend this one enough! Check out my review for all my thoughts.
Abhorsen by Garth Nix – 4⭐ – This was a good ending to the trilogy. I enjoyed the dynamic of Sam and Lirael working together. Mogget was also once again one of my favorite characters, and he really got his chance to shine in this one. The story did get repetitive at times with the main characters mostly just chasing after the enemy for the whole book, but the ending was an exciting climax that had me on the edge of my seat. Even some of the more repetitive bits were still fun to read because of the interactions between the characters, though. I can definitely see why this series is so beloved.

What are you currently reading?
The Darkness Before Them by Matthew Ward (40%) – I’m struggling with this one. I don’t really know why, though. It has lots of cool elements, but I still just find the story so boring. I’m debating whether I want to DNF it, but I got an ARC of the sequel. So, I’d like to get through them both. We’ll see.
A Darker Mischief by Derek Milman (56%) – Everything about this book screams it is something I should love. Dark academia? ✔ Secret societies? ✔ Queer romance? ✔ Unfortunately, the writing is super choppy, and the story is just way too unbelievable for me to be able to take it seriously. I like the main character, though. I have a feeling this one is going to land somewhere between two and three stars for me, which is a huge bummer.
Mirrored Heavens by Rebecca Roanhorse (3%) – I’ve only barely started this one. So, I don’t really have an opinion on it yet. I am excited to finally see how this trilogy wraps up.

What will you read next?

The Undermining of Twyla and Frank by Megan Bannen, Evocation by S.T. Gibson, Abyssal Arcanist by Shami Stovall
I hope you’ve all had a great week! What have you been reading? Have you read any of these books? If so, what did you think? Let me know in the comments!
I’m pretty sure I dnfed The Darkness Before Them or rated it low. I can’t remember lol. I hope your current reads get a bit better!
Thanks! I’m just really not feeling it, which is a bummer. I’m glad to know that I’m not the only one who wasn’t into it.
Sorry that two of your current reads are proving to be a bit disappointing. Hope that Mirrored Heavens is a good end to the trilogy. I’ve heard great things about Evocation so hope that you enjoy that one and look forward to seeing what you think about it.
Yeah. It is definitely a bit of a bummer that these two just aren’t working for me. Mirrored Heavens is good so far, though. I’m 26% into it and enjoying it. I hope the ending is good. I’m excited about Evocation, and I hope I end up liking it.
