Hello, everyone! It’s Wednesday! That means it is time for another WWW Wednesday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words. I’ll be answering the following questions:
- What did you read last?
- What are you currently reading?
- What will you read next?
What did you read last?
The Mirror of Simple Souls by Aline Kiner – 3.75⭐ – I enjoyed this historical fiction novel set in medieval France. It focused on a group of women that bucked the norms of society and created lives for themselves outside of marriage and the church. I had never heard of beguines before, and I liked getting to learn about them. Of course, the backdrop of the tumultuous politics of the beginning of the fall of the Capetian dynasty helped keep my interest, too. This was such an interesting period in French history, and I liked how the story showed the impacts of the political upheavals on this unique group of women. See all my thoughts in my review.
Leather & Lark by Brynne Weaver – 4⭐ – I think I may have liked this book better than Butcher & Blackbird, which I’m sure will be blasphemy to some people. lol. This was a slower book, and I appreciated the time spent getting to know the characters and watching their relationship bloom. B&B just felt a little too all over the place for me, and I liked that this story was less plot heavy. I do wish the plot had been more about these characters, though. The motivation of the “villain” felt really detached from their story despite being the impetus for their marriage of convenience that kicks things off. If you want more murdery romance, though, this will probably scratch that itch, especially if you’ve ever been curious about turning someone into a coffee table.
The Silverblood Promise by James Logan – 4⭐ – This book was a fun adventure. I enjoyed the dynamic between the main character and his child sidekick. They always seemed to manage to find trouble. The world-building was interesting, and the steady pace of the story kept my attention. I do wish things had progressed a little more on the main mystery, but I’m sure that will happen in later books.

What are you currently reading?
The Undermining of Twyla and Frank by Megan Bannen (26%) – I am having so much fun with this book. It is so great to be back in this world, and I just enjoy Bannen’s writing so much. I really like the focus on the best friends to lovers story of an older couple.
How To Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying by Django Wexler (14%) – I had a bit of a rocky start with this one. The narrative style was a bit jarring at first, and the plethora of pop culture references kept taking me out of the story. It is growing on me, though. So, hopefully I end up loving it.

What will you read next?

The Bound Worlds by Megan E. O’Keefe, Navola by Paolo Bacigalupi, Temptation of the Force by Tessa Gratton
I hope you’ve all had a great week! What have you been reading? Have you read any of these books? Let me know in the comments and feel free to link your WWW Wednesday posts there, as well. I’d love to see them!
I enjoyed The Silverblood Promise too and was intrigued by the world building and the alien part of that. I’m certainly looking forward to the next book.
I found that bit really intriguing, too. I definitely want to learn more about what happened to the advanced civilization and how the alien beings fit into it.
Leather and Lark! I think I might just buy that one with the Target sale this week. I still need to read book two. haha
