WWW Wednesday (78) – January 3, 2024

Hello, everyone! It’s Wednesday! That means it is time for another WWW Wednesday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words. I’ll be answering the following questions:

  1. What did you read last?
  2. What are you currently reading?
  3. What will you read next?

What did you read last?

Raiders of the Lost Heart by Jo Segura – 3⭐ – I really loved the premise of this story, but I found the execution to be a bit lacking. The male main character was kind of awful, and I thought the female main character got over what he did way too easily. They were also both incessantly horny for one another from pretty much the first chapter. That isn’t something I usually mind, but it crossed the line into being annoying for me in this one. I think I wanted a bit more adventure, as well. There was much less archeology work/talk than I expected, but I enjoyed what was there. Overall, this just didn’t work for me as well as I’d wanted, but those who really love rivals to lovers stories with lots of combative banter may enjoy this one.

The Partisan by Patrick Worrall – 3⭐ – Unfortunately, this spy thriller was a bit of a dud for me, too. This isn’t a genre I read often. So, I wasn’t expecting to fall in love with it, but everything about this book was just meh to me. I’ll have my full review available tomorrow (hopefully). Be sure to check back to see all of my thoughts.

The Dark Is Rising by Susan Cooper – 5⭐ – I enjoyed my annual re-read of this childhood favorite. I think I’m going to re-read the next three books over the coming months, as well. It has been a while since I’ve read them all.

What are you currently reading?

The Slain Divine by David Dalglish (15%) – I’m so grateful that this book included a recap of the previous books at the beginning. I was able to jump right in and understand what was going on. I liked, but didn’t love, the second book in this series. This one is off to a good start, though, and I’m curious to see how everything will be resolved.

Swann’s Way by Marcel Proust (15%) – I initially planned to finish this book in December. The writing made it pretty much impossible. It is so tangential and incredibly verbose. It is also really beautiful, though, and I decided to take the time restraint off and savor this one. It will be my background read for a while.

Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas (41%) – I like the expanded world-building in this book compared to the first two. There are so many new characters and places, though, that the story feels really bogged down. I’m almost halfway through it, and it feels like very little of note has actually happened. I’m still enjoying it. I just hope things pick up a bit soon.

What will you read next?

Song of Silver, Flame Like Night by Amelie Wen Zhao, Dark Star Burning, Ash Falls White by Amelie Wen Zhao, The City of Stardust by Georgia Summers

I hope you’ve all had a great week! What have you been reading? Have you read any of these books? If so, what did you think? Let me know in the comments!

  1. Sorry to hear that it was a mid week for reading! 🙃 I feel like the reasons why Raiders didn’t work for you would be the same for me so down the TBR it goes. I hope you enjoy Wen Zhao’s duology, as well as your current and other future reads more! 🙂

    • Yeah. I’d shuffle Raiders to the bottom of the TBR if I could do it over again. lol. It was so disappointing.

I loved the first book in Wen Zhao’s duology when I read it last year. I thought I’d be waiting a while before getting to the second one because the Illumicrate edition isn’t even up for pre-order yet. My library surprised me by getting the audiobook already. So, I’m going to listen to the audiobook of both of them as soon as I finish listening to Heir of Fire. 🙂

  2. I felt the same about Raiders of the lost heart. I did like the archeology aspect! The romance was just meh.

  3. I’ve heard similar things about Raiders of the Lost Heart. Have you met Manon yet in Heir of Fire?? She’s one of my favorite characters throughout the series!!! City of Stardust is up next for me too.
