WWW Wednesday (147) – October 1, 2025

Hello, everyone! It’s Wednesday! That means it is time for another WWW Wednesday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words. I’ll be answering the following questions:

  1. What did you read last?
  2. What are you currently reading?
  3. What will you read next?

What did you read last?

Here is a look at the books I’ve finished (and DNFd) in the last week since my last WWW Wednesday check-in:

Katabasis by R.F. Kuang (4.25⭐) – It is hard to put into words how I feel about this book. I think it is safe to say that Kuang is great at writing complex main characters that I don’t necessarily like. lol. This book was no exception. The story worked well as a critique of some of the worst parts of academia, but it suffered at times due to the pacing. Kuang also seemingly had really strong ideas about some of the domains of hell while struggling with others. It left the narrative feeling a bit lopsided. Overall, I really enjoyed the book and Kuang’s writing despite some flaws and am, as always, impressed by her ability to convey the experience of academia in her stories.

Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie (DNF) – I liked the concept of this book. AI that powered ships and a ton of ancillary people to control an empire. What a cool idea! Unfortunately, the execution was severely lacking. I was bored to tears and had to DNF. Even listening on audio couldn’t save this one for me.

Voidwalker by S.A. MacLean (49%) – I’m still working on this one. I didn’t realize that this book is almost 600 pages. It’s definitely a chonker. I’m enjoying my time with it, though. The world is really interesting, and I like the main characters. I’m only halfway through, and Fi has already shown a lot of growth. Although, she’s still super reckless. The monster love interest reminds me of a cat so much, and I love it. I’m looking forward to seeing where their relationship goes.

A Steeping of Blood by Hafsah Faizal (19%) – I didn’t love the first book in this duology, but I liked it well enough to get the second book from the library to see how things would wrap up. So far, the group is at each other’s throats, and things are looking dire. I love that the kitten is playing a big role so far, though. 🙂

What will you read next?

I’ll be starting my group buddy re-read of Jade City today, and I can’t wait. I’ve also got a couple of ARCs on deck once I finish Voidwalker.

Jade City by Fonda Lee, All of Us Murderers by KJ Charles, Savage Blooms by S.T. Gibson

I hope you’ve all had a great week! What have you been reading? Have you read any of these books? Let me know in the comments and feel free to link your WWW Wednesday posts there, as well. I’d love to see them!

  1. I’m glad that I’m not the only who DNF’d Ancillary Justice. I thought I would love it but I couldn’t get into it at all. Voidwalker is definitely intriguing me.
Enjoy all of your books this week.
