Hello, everyone! It’s Wednesday! That means it is time for another WWW Wednesday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words. I’ll be answering the following questions:
- What did you read last?
- What are you currently reading?
- What will you read next?
What did you read last?
The Foxhole Court by Nora Sakavic – 3⭐ – What the hell even was this book? It took me forever to figure out what was going on. The sport was an invention of the author, which confused the hell out of me, and the character dynamics were absolute chaos. There also seemed to be ties between the characters and the mafia. The portrayal of mental illness was also weird, overly aggressive, and likely offensive. All that being said, I think I managed to have a rudimentary understanding of the characters by the end, and they did grow on me. The sheer ridiculousness and chaos of it all was entertaining despite being incredibly perplexing for most of the book. I’ve heard the series gets better and makes more sense as it goes on. So, I’ll probably give the sequel a shot at some point since the library has the audio.
Waiting for the Flood by Alexis Hall – 4.25⭐ – This re-release of one of Hall’s earliest stories was really good and packed in a lot of emotion. It had an extra novella and other bonus content that helped to round out the original story. See my review for all my thoughts!
The Trials of Empire by Richard Swan – 4.25⭐ – This was a great conclusion to the Empire of the Wolf series. The beginning was a bit slow, but it added so much to the world-building by taking the characters to new locales. The magic and supernatural realms were explored in greater depth, and each of the characters had a compelling arc with a satisfying end. See my review for all my thoughts!

What are you currently reading?
Voyage of the Damned by Frances White (45%) – I knew from the description that I’d probably love this book. Luckily, I was right. A murder mystery on board a boat with magic and a disaster bi male main character? I think this book was written for me. lol. The voice is super snarky and fun, and I am really enjoying the whodunnit mystery. The world-building is a bit clunky at times, but it hasn’t impacted my enjoyment of the characters and story.
Faebound by Saara El-Arifi (60%) – I’ve been debating whether I want to DNF this one. The characters are really one-dimensional, and the story has just been really boring to me. The dialogue has been very stiff at times, too. Some of the world-building has been interesting, though, and my curiosity about the history of the world is pretty much the only thing keeping me going. There’s also a surprising lack of romance in this story (at least so far), which is odd since I thought this was supposed to be a romantasy.
Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas (33%) – I’m still chugging along on this one. It is interesting, and I’m definitely glad I read The Assassin’s Blade before moving on to this book. I’m still completely heartbroken over Dorian because I need him to be okay. I’m also not a huge fan of Rowan yet, especially since his arrival has meant the addition of fae possessiveness drama, which is one of the things I hated about ACOTAR. I really want to see how Celaena gets her revenge on her former master, and I’m also super curious to see where the story with the witches goes.
Swann’s Way by Marcel Proust (18%) – Still no progress on this book. I just haven’t really been in the mood for it. I’ll get back to it soon (hopefully)…

What will you read next?

Disciples of Chaos by M. K. Lobb, Evergreen by Devin Greenlee, Proper Scoundrels by Allie Therin
I hope you’ve all had a great week! What have you been reading? Have you read any of these books? If so, what did you think? Let me know in the comments!
I;m sorry that you aren’t enjoying Faebound more. I’m still unsure whether I want to read it or not as I did love The Final Strife and Battle Drum
Yeah. I managed to finish it, but I definitely won’t be picking up the sequel. I’m so glad I borrowed it from the library instead of buying it. I hope you like it more than I did if you decide to give it a shot.
That’s a shame about Faebound! It looked like an excellent book!
Yeah. It was a huge disappointment for me. I managed to finish it, but I won’t be picking up the sequel.
Sorry about Faebound, but definitely DNF if you are not into it! I finally finished Trials of Empire! It was good but dannnnggg was it a surprise about how horrific it was. haha. I was scared to walk down, to my son’s nursery, at night. 😀 I’m a big chicken though!
Ooh, I’m curious about the Alexis Hall — I need to read more of his books.
I’m a huge fan of Hall. I like his ability to make me feel for his characters. I’ve yet to come across a book of his I didn’t enjoy.
Ooh about Voyage of the Damned because it was one of the Illumicrate books and I was curious about it because I hadn’t seen much about it on the blogosphere but oh 🙁 about Faebound! I was really keen to check that one out but from what you’ve said, it sounds quite… awkward. What a shame! As someone who’s trying to DNF more this year (I did DNF one last week!) if you’re not into it, put it down. I hope you enjoy the rest of your reads though!
I think Voyage of the Damned probably hasn’t gotten more blog coverage because it hasn’t been released in the US. I love the Illumicrate edition of the book, though, and I am glad I got it. It’s one of my favorites from them because the blue colors they used are just so pretty.
Faebound was a huge disappointment. I ended up finishing it. The last 30-40% was less boring, but I still didn’t love it. I won’t be reading the sequel.
