WWW Wednesday (91) – April 3, 2024

Hello, everyone! It’s Wednesday! That means it is time for another WWW Wednesday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words. I’ll be answering the following questions:

  1. What did you read last?
  2. What are you currently reading?
  3. What will you read next?

What did you read last?

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff – 5⭐ – This was such a roller coaster ride. I loved the storytelling format of using different types of media to bring the story to life. I especially enjoyed getting to experience the inner musings of the bonkers AI. I did not expect that ending AT ALL, and I’m really curious to see where things go next.

The Sugared Game by KJ Charles – 4.75⭐ – This was another great book by Charles. I liked that we got to know Kim better in this one, and the confrontation with Zodiac was thrilling. I’m not really sure where the story will go next given how this one ended, but I’ll definitely be finding out because I love these characters so much.

Court of Wanderers by Rin Chupeco – 3.25⭐ – This story had very erratic pacing and a messy, convoluted plot, but I still enjoyed all of the vampire politics and the poly relationship. It wasn’t as good as the first book, but I’m still a fan of the duology and would love to see more stories set in this world. There is tons of potential. Read all my thoughts in my review!

The Mars House by Natasha Pulley – 4.25⭐ – This book was SO GOOD! It was such an interesting mash up of topics, including climate change, immigration, reality TV, murder mystery, and the pitfalls of constant connectivity, among others. It was also set on Mars as the name implies. Pulley created such a fascinating society, and I loved all of the political maneuvering and mystery weaved throughout the story. It definitely pulled the rug out from under me a few times, and the relationship growth between January and Aubrey was compelling to read. They each helped the other to understand a different perspective and were genuinely a great pairing.

What are you currently reading?

The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern (23%) – I am loving this book so far. The writing is beautiful and lyrical, and the story is like a huge puzzle. I need to know what happens next! I’m glad to be buddy reading this with Dini because we both have so many theories. It is fun to geek out over them together.

Butcher & Blackbird by Brynne Weaver (17%) – This isn’t my typical read, but the premise sounded kind of hilarious. So, I’ve decided to give it a try. It is definitely not for the faint of heart. lol. The story follows two serial killers who kill other serial killers as they compete to see who can make the kills first. They also happen to be super horny for one another, and I mean SUPER horny. It is bordering on annoying at times, but the humor has made up for it.

Swann’s Way by Marcel Proust (23%) – I didn’t make any progress on this one this week… womp, womp.

What will you read next?

The Hemlock Queen by Hannah Whitten, The Emperor and the Endless Palace by Justinian Huang, Deep Is the Fen by Lili Wilkinson

I hope you’ve all had a great week! What have you been reading? Have you read any of these books? If so, what did you think? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I loved Illuminae and The Sugared Game! 😍 The Illuminae Files series is SO good. It’s one of the few books I’ve reread—if you like audios and can get your hands on the audio for book two I’d highly recommend it! 😃 I’m so glad we’re both enjoying Starless Sea. I just wanna keep reading cos I need to know what happens next too, lol.

    • I was so impressed by it. I really loved the talking mammoths. Lol. I have one of the author’s other books on my shelf. I just haven’t gotten to it. It’s definitely being bumped up my TBR now.

  2. I’m so glad you loved Illuminae!! I loved that whole series. Ohhh, Butcher and Blackbird! I just bought it on the kindle last week. I’ve seen rave reviews but there’s a lot of triggers. I read the Mindf*ck series and that’s kinda… brutal. I’m hoping that means I can take this one! I can’t wait to see what you think!

    • I liked Butcher and Blackbird. It was entertaining but also kind of dumb. Lol. Some of it made me roll my eyes, and other parts made me gag. So, I definitely had lots of different reactions to it. I’m curious to see your thoughts.

      • Oh my goshhhh.. My neighbor is reading it right now and I’m kinda scared. haha. I got it for $2 on Kindle so I’m not out too much if I hate it. lol

  3. I haven’t heard of DEEP IS THE FEN, but the cover at a quick glance reminded me of Kingfisher’s WHAT MOVED THE DEAD. Sorry to see COURT OF WANDERS didn’t quite live up to the first book! The first book has been on my TBR for a little while now; I bought it because my library didn’t have it for the longest time, but of course I’ve taken forever to get to it that they now have it. 🤣

    • I’d never heard of DEEP IS THE FEN either until the publisher reached out. They were kind enough to send a finished copy.

Yeah. COURT OF WANDERERS wasn’t as good, but I still liked it. I still definitely recommend SILVER UNDER NIGHTFALL, though, even if you only want to read it as a standalone.

  4. I just finished a reread of Illuminae a few minutes ago and will be jumping into the next book tomorrow which will also be a reread for me. I love this trilogy. I read Butcher & Blackbird not that long ago and loved it so much.
