First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?
- Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
- Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
- Finally… reveal the book!
Today’s First Lines:
Kat plunged, rope hissing through her gloves. Leering grotesques and arched windows rushed into the upper darkness. A heartbeat, and the tower’s wall gave way to the thick, jutting dais of its foundation, then to stone archways and corroded steel braces. And at last to the hollow, empty void.

Kat doesn’t care about any of that. A talented thief, she’s pursuing one big score that will settle the debt that destroyed her family. No easy feat in a realm where indentured spirits hold vigil over every vault and treasure room. However, Kat has a unique she can speak to those spirits, and even command them. And she has no qualms using her power to her advantage.
Kat’s not a hero. She just wants to be free. To have her old life back. But as rebellion rekindles and the war for Khalad’s future begins, everyone—Kat included—will have to pick a side.
Have you read The Darkness Before Them? What did you think? I’d love to see your spoiler-free opinions in the comments!

I have not read this one yet but It’s on my tbr. The first line kind of feels like it thrusts you into the middle of the action already. I want to know more about this void.🤔
I’m really curious to learn more about the void, too. The first lines definitely made me want to read more. I hope we both enjoy it! 🙂
