First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?
- Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
- Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
- Finally… reveal the book!
This week’s First Lines Fridays is a recent release that I’ve just borrowed from the library. I’ll be buddy reading it with Celeste @ A Literary Escape soon, and I am looking forward to it even more after reading these first lines.
Today’s First Lines:
It takes me two weeks to die, locked in my own dungeon.
Not for lack of trying on my part, mind, but orders have come down from the Dark Lord that the Princess isn’t allowed to pop off early. I found a bit of chicken bone in my soup once, but the spoilsports got to me before I could choke on it.
Do you know which book this is from? Scroll down to find out!

Title: How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying
Author: Django Wexler
Publication Date: May 21, 2024
Goodreads Synopsis
Groundhog Day meets Guardians of the Galaxy in Django Wexler’s laugh-out-loud fantasy tale about a young woman who, tired of defending humanity from the Dark Lord, decides to become the Dark Lord herself.
Davi has done this all before. She’s tried to be the hero and take down the all-powerful Dark Lord. A hundred times she’s rallied humanity and made the final charge. But the time loop always gets her in the end. Sometimes she’s killed quickly. Sometimes it takes a while. But she’s been defeated every time.
This time? She’s done being the hero and done being stuck in this endless time loop. If the Dark Lord always wins, then maybe that’s who she needs to be. It’s Davi’s turn to play on the winning side.
That’s it for this week’s First Lines Fridays! Have you read How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying? What did you think? I’d love to see your spoiler-free opinions in the comments!
That is a fantastic start for a book I am so intrigued and it seems like the type of humour I like in books!
