Today I’m participating in Top Ten Tuesday. This meme was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together. Each week there is a new theme/topic, and participants choose ten books that fit it.
This week’s theme is Books with Memorable Animal Companions. This was such a timely topic for me because I just had a wonderful visit to the zoo over the weekend. They even had a red panda, which is my favorite animal. It was SO CUTE!! Obviously, I love real life animals, but fictional ones are awesome, too. Animal companions, especially magic ones, are so much fun to read about. Here are ten books with some of the most memorable animal companions I’ve ever read. The titles link to my review, if available, and the covers link to the Goodreads page of each book in case you want to learn more about them!

The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart, The Raven Scholar by Antonia Hodgson, Lirael by Garth Nix, Emily Wilde’s Compendium of Lost Tales by Heather Fawcett, Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros

The Undermining of Twyla and Frank by Megan Bannen, Academy Arcanist by Shami Stovall, The Dream Thieves by Maggie Stiefvater, The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez, The Phoenix Keeper by S. A. Maclean
There you have it! Ten books with memorable animal companions. Have you read any of my picks? What are your favorite fictional animal companions? Let me know down in the comments!
I like it when books have animal companions so long as the animals remains alive and well. 🙂
Yeah. It is definitely a bummer if the animals come to harm in the story. I, too, prefer them to be safe and happy by the end.
I am reading the Raven Scholar and I adore it!
It is such a great book!
You have included most of my favourites on your top ten. I loved Sol and Mephi especially
They are both such great companions.
I haven’t read any of these books, but I’m glad you enjoyed the animal companions in them!
Happy TTT!

Thank you!
I love animals in books, but I definitely need them to be alive and happy at the end of the story! Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!
Yeah. I definitely get bummed out when bad things happen to the animals. I prefer them to be alive and happy at the end, too.
I mean, obviously THE BONE SHARD DAUGHTER and LIRAEL have to be included. Fantastic animal companions, though I find myself partial to the chaotic cat Mogget, hehe.
Right?! They should be on every list of animal companions because they are absolutely top-tier.
