WWW Wednesday (77) – December 27, 2023

Hello, everyone! It’s Wednesday! That means it is time for another WWW Wednesday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words. I’ll be answering the following questions:

  1. What did you read last?
  2. What are you currently reading?
  3. What will you read next?

What did you read last?

Inquisitor: Rise of the Red Blade by Delilah S. Dawson – 4.75⭐ – This was my favorite Star Wars book of the year. It was emotional and gripping, and the Clone Wars content was fantastic. The story highlighted the failings of the Jedi and illustrated how the dogma of the Order led to corruption by the Dark. The information on the early Inquisitors was also really fascinating, and I wish there had been even more of it. Overall, this was a phenomenal Star Wars story.

Fellow Travelers by Thomas Mallon – 3.5⭐ – I wanted to love this book way more than I did. The prose just didn’t work for me. The first half of the book was bogged down by the McCarthy hearings, and it took me a long time to become invested in the characters. I found the author’s treatment of the hearings to be incredibly confusing, and it took me forever to figure out all the main players and how they were connected. I enjoyed it more once I did understand it, and I eventually did become significantly invested in the two main characters. The ending left me gutted. I wanted so much more for Tim. This one was a mixed bag, but I do recommend it if you enjoy historical political fiction with queer characters.

Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands by Heather Fawcett – ??⭐ – Stay tune for my thoughts on this one. I’ll have a review ready tomorrow (hopefully). I loved this book, though. Maybe even more than the first one…

Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas – 4⭐ – I thought this book was a huge improvement compared to the first one. The plot was interesting and things moved forward at a good pace. Many of the twists were predictable, but I definitely didn’t see THAT death coming. There was lots of great world-building, and I’m definitely even more interested to see where things are going next. I listened to this one on audio, and I think I’ve come to the conclusion that I prefer listening to Maas’ prose rather than reading it. So, I’ll be doing the audiobooks from now on.

What are you currently reading?

The Dark Is Rising by Susan Cooper (52%) – I’m about halfway through my yearly re-read of this childhood favorite. As always, I’m loving it, and I always seem to notice new things on each read.

Swann’s Way by Marcel Proust (1%) – I’ve only read the translator’s introduction to this one so far. So, I don’t really have an opinion yet. I am excited to read it, though. 🙂

Raiders of the Lost Heart by Jo Segura (1%) – I’m starting this one as soon as I finish this post because my library hold just arrived. I cannot wait to listen to it. I love the cover, and I have high hopes that it will be a cute story.

What will you read next?

The Slain Divine by David Dalglish, Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas, Crimson Climb by E. K. Johnston

I hope you’ve all had a great week! What have you been reading? Have you read any of these books? If so, what did you think? Let me know in the comments!

  1. Ooh, I’m so excited to read your thoughts about the second Emily Wilde book! 😍 Also, is that Fellow Travellers book the same as the film? I hope you continue to enjoy your next book(s) and wrap up your 2023 reads on a high note!

    • I loved the second Emily Wilde book so much!!!

Yeah. It is the same Fellow Travelers as the recent TV show. I haven’t watched it yet, but I plan to. I was waiting until after I’d read the book. I think I might like the show better because I liked the overall story, just not the writing style.
