WWW Wednesday (90) – March 27, 2024

Hello, everyone! It’s Wednesday! That means it is time for another WWW Wednesday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words. I’ll be answering the following questions:

  1. What did you read last?
  2. What are you currently reading?
  3. What will you read next?

What did you read last?

All That’s Left in the World by Erik J. Brown – 4.25⭐ – I enjoyed this book. It was hard to read at times, though, because of how fresh the pandemic trauma still is. The characters were great, and the differences in their attitudes toward others made their companionship a compelling one. I enjoyed the will they or won’t they dynamic of their relationship even though I knew they’d almost certainly end up together. I’m looking forward to the sequel being published later this year.

To Cage a God by Elizabeth May – 3.5⭐ – This story had such a great setting, and the ideas behind the magic system were really cool. The story was just a little too dull, though, and things moved at a snail’s pace. I liked the characters, and each POV brought something unique to the story. Overall, it was just a mixed bag. You can find all my thoughts in my review!

Unfit to Print by KJ Charles – 3.75⭐ – I liked this mashup of historical, second-chance romance and murder mystery. It had all the usual wit, humor, and heart I’ve come to expect from Charles. I just felt like its novella size let it down a bit, and I came away feeling somewhat unsatisfied with the abruptness of the ending.

Icebreaker by A. L. Graziadei – 4⭐ – I know nothing about hockey, but I still enjoyed this one. It was more of a coming-of-age story than a romance, but I did like the central, rivals to lovers relationship. There was great mental health representation, as well, with the main character struggling to cope with his depression and anxiety. The ending was too abrupt, though, and I honestly think this story would have worked much better as a duology. The end just skipped over the entire second semester of college for the characters, and I think a second book covering the growth during that time period would have rounded things out really nicely.

What are you currently reading?

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff (40%) – This is my last Trope-ical Readathon book, and I’m enjoying it so far. The use of multimedia is such an inventive way to tell a story. I’ve noticed that it requires a lot more concentration than a typical prose narrative, though. So, it is taking me more time than I thought to get through it.

The Mars House by Natasha Pulley (40%) – I’ve wanted to read Pulley’s work for quite some time. The Kingdoms has been on my shelf since it came out. When I saw several positive reviews of her newest book, I decided to use an Audible credit on it. I’m enjoying it so far. It is such a thought-provoking mix of topics, and I am totally invested in seeing where the fake marriage plot goes.

The Sugared Game by KJ Charles (28%) – I enjoyed the first Will Darling book, and this one is off to a good start, too. Kim is still a bit of a twat, but he definitely keeps Will’s life interesting. lol. Zodiac is rearing its ugly head again, and I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of trouble Will and Kim get up to this time.

Court of Wanderers by Rin Chupeco (3%) – I just started this one, and things are already beginning with a bang. I enjoyed the first book in this duology, and I’m very curious to see what the polyamorous vampire/vampire hunter trio get up to next.

Swann’s Way by Marcel Proust (23%) – I didn’t make any progress on this one this week…

What will you read next?

The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern, The Emperor and the Endless Palace by Justinian Huang, The Hemlock Queen by Hannah Whitten

I hope you’ve all had a great week! What have you been reading? Have you read any of these books? If so, what did you think? Let me know in the comments!
