WWW Wednesday (93) – April 17, 2024

Hello, everyone! It’s Wednesday! That means it is time for another WWW Wednesday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words. I’ll be answering the following questions:

  1. What did you read last?
  2. What are you currently reading?
  3. What will you read next?

What did you read last?

The Emperor and the Endless Palace by Justinian Huang – 3.25⭐ – I was so disappointed by my lack of love for this book. The premise of reincarnated lovers had me so excited, but the plot just didn’t deliver. The writing was good, though, other than the weird sexual euphemisms. You can find all my thoughts in my review.

A Dawn of Onyx by Kate Golden – 4.25⭐ – I’ve been seeing the sequel to this book a lot around the interwebs and decided to pick this one up on a whim. My library had the audio available. So, I figured why not… I’m glad I decided to read it. It was a pretty run of the mill romantasy, but the author executed the familiar tropes well. I look forward to seeing where the story goes next.

Deep Is the Fen by Lili Wilkinson – 4.5⭐ – This book was so good! I loved the mystery of the secret society, and the setting of the fen was delightfully gross and creepy. The protagonist was great, and I enjoyed the rivals to lovers energy because it made for great banter and a tense dynamic. See all my thoughts in my review!

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern – 4⭐ – I decided to read this book because I loved The Starless Sea so much. I didn’t like this one quite as much, but the setting of the circus was interesting and beautifully described. The writing, in general, was exquisite and a treat to read, but I just didn’t find the story quite as compelling as Morgenstern’s other book.

What are you currently reading?

Night of the Witch by Sara Raasch & Beth Revis (22%) – I’m having a bit of trouble staying focused on this one. I like the story. It is just kind of similar to a couple of other books I’ve read recently with the witch and witch hunter romance trope. I’ve borrowed the audiobook from the library to see if that format manages to keep me engaged with it a little better.

Tower of Dawn by Sarah J. Maas (7%) – I just started this one yesterday, and I’m excited to see what is going on in this new part of the Throne of Glass world. I was pleasantly surprised to see Irene pop up, and I hope to get to know her character better in this book. She definitely has her work cut out for her, but I’m optimistic she can help Chaol.

Swann’s Way by Marcel Proust (23%) – I’ve finally decided to DNF this one. I liked the prose for the most part, but the meandering of the narrative was just too off-putting for me.

What will you read next?

Misery Bay by Owen Lach, Obsidian Tower by Melissa Caruso, Swordcrossed by Freya Marske

I hope you’ve all had a great week! What have you been reading? Have you read any of these books? If so, what did you think? Let me know in the comments!

  1. It’s disappointing when a book you’ve been so keen to read doesn’t work for you but it looks like you had a pretty good reading week overall 🙂 I remember enjoying Tower of Dawn although I feel like that book gets the most flack cos it’s about Chaol, lol. I can’t wait to see what you think of Swords Crossed and I hope you enjoy all your reads!

  2. I hope that you enjoy The Obsidian Tower. I didn’t realise that Freya Marske had a new book coming out so I need to investigate that one.
    Happy Reading!

  3. Glad you have been enjoying your reads! I hope the next ones will have high ratings as well.

  4. So sad you didn’t love The Emperor and the Endless Palace! I’ve been eyeing this for a while and it looks SO GOOD. T_T I also got an eARC of The Night of the Witch some time ago and completely forgot to read it (oops). I have a feeling I’m going to feel the same way as you are right now once I get to it. Best of luck to us that it turns out great. 😭

    • I hope you enjoy The Emperor and the Endless Palace when you read it. I was really bummed that I didn’t love it. The plot just didn’t work for me, and I thought the ending was too abrupt.
