Hello, everyone! Today I have another year-end list of top books, my favorite books of 2024. I managed to narrow the list down to ten books this year. These are all 2024 releases that I’ve managed to read this year. You can find my favorite backlist books in another post here. So, be sure to check it out, as well. All of the covers link to Goodreads in case anything catches your eye…

The Bound Worlds by Megan E. O’Keefe – I didn’t love this book quite as much as the others in the trilogy, but it was still an epic conclusion to the story. It was full of mind-bending science fiction concepts, and I appreciated where all of the character arcs ended up. I’ll definitely be exploring this author’s backlist in the coming year and plan to be on the lookout for whatever she does next.
We Shall Be Monsters by Tara Sim – Sim is one of my favorite authors. So, it is no surprise that this book landed among my top reads of the year. This story was a great mix of mystery, horror, and fantasy. The characters had plenty of depth, and the plot and themes were compelling. I never wanted to put this one down. Who doesn’t love a good story about necromancy and exploring the nature of evil?
Running Close to the Wind by Alexandra Rowland – The main character in this book, Avra, was one of my favorite characters of the year. He was absolutely ridiculous, incessantly horny, and the definition of a disaster bisexual. His antics caused me to laugh out loud countless times while reading. Trust me when I say you’ve never read a tale about pirates quite like this one.
You Should Be So Lucky by Cat Sebastian – This was another home run for Sebastian. She is quickly becoming one of my favorite romance authors. This was a beautiful slow burn romance that tackled the experience of grief and loss. It was also a great snapshot of queer life in the mid-20th century.
Deep Is the Fen by Lili Wilkinson – This book really shocked me with how much I loved it. I’d never heard of the author before and went in knowing very little about it. The setting was so good, and the writing was very atmospheric. I really liked the characters, too, and enjoyed their journey ingratiating themselves into the creepy secret society.

The Phoenix Bride by Natasha Siegel – I loved this book much more than Siegel’s first one. It was a great historical romance. It had drama, calamity, and lovers from different social classes. The whole thing just really worked for me.
The Warm Hands of Ghosts by Katherine Arden – This was my first book by Arden, but it definitely won’t be my last. The writing in this book was absolutely stunning. I couldn’t get enough of it. The story was very moving, as well, and the setting of World War One was an incredibly compelling one.
The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett – This book was a fascinating blend of mystery and fantasy. The world-building was exquisite. The use of plants in architecture was so cool to read. The descriptiveness just really sold the uniqueness of the setting. The characters were really great, too, especially the eccentric mentor/investigator.
The Atlas Complex by Olivie Blake – This is probably a controversial choice, but I loved this book. It made a lot of people angry because of some of the choices the author made. However, I thought it all made sense given the themes of the entire series. There was never going to be a happily ever after for everyone. So, I was satisfied by how it all wrapped up.
The Undermining of Twyla and Frank by Megan Bannen – I loved everything about this book. It had humor, romance, and a bit of mystery. The best friends to lovers romance was perfection, and I loved the author’s take on dragons. I just had a wonderful time with this one and cannot recommend it enough!
There you have it. My favorite books of 2024! Do we share any top books in common? What were your favorite books of the year? Let me know in the comments!
I was hoping book outlet had the Phoenix bride when I made my purchase the other day, but alas! I’ll keep looking! 👀 Or maybe my library has it. Nice list!
I’ve been dying to pick up a copy of The Phoenix Bride, but I have never come across it in the wild. I hope you are able to find it somewhere!
It looks like you had an awesome reading year 🙂 I’ve got so many of these on my TBR and I’m particularly keen to read Rowland’s and Bannen’s books cos I just feel like they could be new favourites for me too. 😍 I hope you continue to discover many new amazing reads in 2025, Chris!
Looks like you had an amazing reading year! Twyla and Frank was such a good one, and I have several of your others on my TBR – Blake’s is at the top of my list. Happy new year!
Happy New Year! Twyla and Frank really was so, so good. I hope you enjoy Blake’s finale to the trilogy. A lot of people didn’t. lol.
You had a better reading year than I did! That being said, I hope more people read Katherine Arden’s novel. It was brilliant! I do need to read Megan E. O’Keefe’s completed trilogy before her next one gets published.
It really was such a great book! I was surprised that it didn’t get more hype.
Great post, I really want to pick up The Warm Hands of Ghosts
I really, really loved it! I hope you do, too. 🙂
DEEP IS THE FEN is new to me – sounds like something I should check out! THE WARM HANDS OF GHOSTS was one of my 2024 favourite reads as well. Highly recommend her Winternight trilogy 🙂 Happy New Year!
I actually started the Winternight trilogy in 2024, too! I enjoyed the first book a lot. I hope you enjoy Deep Is the Fen if you decide to pick it up. 🙂
Oh, excellent! I found that each book in that trilogy was better than the last, so you are in for a treat as you go. 😁
