The Quarter Year Crisis Book Tag (2025)

Hello, everyone! I’ve seen this tag making the rounds and decided to participate. I’m a bit late to the party for the Quarter Year Crisis Book Tag considering that April is almost over. Oh well. In case you’re interested, the last time I participated in this tag was back in 2023. The original tag was created by Roisin @Roisin’s Reading over on BookTube.

How many books have you read so far?

I’ve read 49 books so far this year!!!! My pace has been a little slower than the last few years, but I am still well on my way to reaching my goal. I’m 19 books ahead of schedule. 🙂

Have you already found a book you think might be a 2025 favourite? If not, what was your favourite book you read that wasn’t quite five stars?

I’ve truly had a great year so far when it comes to reading. Four books have earned five stars from me, which is a lot for so early in the year. It is going to be hell trying to pick a favorite at the end of the year. I might not even try. lol.

The Raven Scholar by Antonia Hodgson, The Hymn to Dionysus by Natasha Pulley, Stranger Skies by Pascale Lacelle, A Drop of Corruption by Robert Jackson Bennett

Any 1-star books / least favourite book of the year?

I don’t have any 1-star books because I typically DNF anything that would receive that rating before finishing it. So, I’ve chosen to pick one of my DNFs, The Starlight Heir by Amalie Howard, for the honor of least favorite book of the quarter. I hated every second that I was reading this book. The main character was insufferable, and the romance just didn’t work for me. The FMC was more concerned about who was making her wet than the fact she was being hunted for her powers. I gave this one a fair shake, though, and got 51% of the way through it before throwing in the towel.

Most read genre so far?

My reading has been heavily dominated by fantasy so far this year. I’ve also read quite a bit of romance, queer fiction, and YA. This is pretty typical for me. So, there were no surprises here.

A book that surprised you?

Heavenly Tyrant by Xiran Jay Zhao definitely surprised me but not in a good way. I hated this book so much that I’m DNFing the series.

A book that’s come out in 2025 already that you want to read but haven’t yet?

There are quite a few I’m hoping to get to read soon. Here’s a look at some of them…

The Gentleman and His Vowsmith by Rebecca Ide, Holy Terrors by Margaret Owen, The Ragpicker King by Cassandra Clare, Emberclaw by L.R. Lam, Go Luck Yourself by Sara Raasch

One goal you made that you’re succeeding at

I’ve stuck to my comic book buying ban so far this year. Hooray! I have such a huge collection already that I need to read. Looking back on it now, I think the primary driver of my continued purchasing of comics for so long was FOMO. After needing to move my giant collection across several states, I decided it would be best to just focus on reading the stuff I have.

One goal you made that you need to focus on

I’m doing pretty well on my goals for the year. I did give up on one of them, though. My book journal lasted one month before I forgot it existed. So, I’ve decided that they just aren’t for me even though I love the idea of them. If I had to pick one goal to focus on, I think it would need to be reading more from my shelves. That’s a goal that perpetually seems to need more focus.

That’s it for the Quarter Year Crisis Book Tag. I don’t plan to tag anyone since I’m a bit late to getting around to this one. However, if you decide to participate, please link back to this post so that I can see your answers. 🙂 Happy reading!

  1. Oof, I was already glad I skipped THE STARLIGHT HEIR in my romantasy sub, but you’ve made me feel even better about my decision. I also love the idea of a book journal, but I can’t even remember to journal regularly for life so I don’t try to journal for anything at all. 🤣

    • The Starlight Heir was SO BAD. You dodged a bullet there. Yeah. Journaling is a real struggle for me, in general, too. I have so many pretty notebooks, though, and really want to use them.

  2. LOL. The one time I tried a book journal, it didn’t even last for a month. Like you, I love the idea of one but I just couldn’t find the energy to complete it. I do have serious envy of some of the ones I see being completed though.
