Hello, everyone! It’s Wednesday! That means it is time for another WWW Wednesday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words. I’ll be answering the following questions:
- What did you read last?
- What are you currently reading?
- What will you read next?
What did you read last?
A Darker Mischief by Derek Milman – 2.5⭐ – I was so excited about this queer dark academia book, but I did not have a good time with it. The writing was rough, and the plot completely jumped the shark. You can find all my thoughts in my review.
Mirrored Heavens by Rebecca Roanhorse – 3.75⭐ – This was a good conclusion to the series. Its pace and focus felt very similar to the second book, with a focus on character and political plotting rather than a ton of action and battle sequences. I liked where most of the characters ended up, and I particularly enjoyed that Serapio and Xiala had such a compelling role in how things played out.
The Darkness Before Them by Matthew Ward – 3⭐ – I had trouble getting into this one. Huge swaths of the story were a slog to get through despite having interesting world-building. It took me a while to really care about the characters, but everything did eventually come together, which has me interested in picking up the sequel to see what happens next. See all my thoughts in my review.
The Watchmaker of Filigree Street by Natasha Pulley – 4.5⭐ – I think I may have found a new favorite author. I enjoyed The Mars House earlier this year. So, I picked up one of Pulley’s older books on audio. I really liked this book, too. It started out a bit slow, but I was almost instantly pulled into the lives of the characters. It kept me guessing about how things would turn out, and I found the magical elements interesting, if a bit hand wavy.

What are you currently reading?
The Mirror of Simple Souls by Aline Kiner (18%) – I really love historical fiction and this particular era of French history. I like that it examines this time period through the eyes of some remarkable women, and I already feel like I’ve learned so much from the story.
The Silverblood Promise by James Logan (2%) – I’ve only just started this one this morning and don’t have much of an opinion yet. I’ve been looking forward to it, though, and I have high hopes that I’ll love it.

What will you read next?

The Undermining of Twyla and Frank by Megan Bannen, How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying by Django Wexler, The Bound Worlds by Megan E. O’Keefe
I hope you’ve all had a great week! What have you been reading? Have you read any of these books? If so, what did you think? Let me know in the comments!
I’m glad that you enjoyed The Watchmaker. I loved the connection that Natasha Pulley made with it in The Mars House. I really liked The Silverblood Promise and hope that you do too.
Thanks! I’m really loving Pulley’s writing, and I can’t believe it has taken me so long to finally pick up her books. I’ve had The Kingdoms on my shelf for years, and I hope to get to it soon.
The Kingdoms is the only one of hers that I haven’t enjoyed for some reason. I didn’t really get into the two storylines
I hope you love The Silverblood Promise, it was so much fun😁
Thank you! I’m enjoying it so far. 🙂
I hope you enjoy your current reads and they go better than some of your recent finished books! Glad you ended up liking The Darkness Before Them for the most part.
Thanks! The way things came together at the end saved it somewhat. It was still a slog, but it got interesting enough to give the sequel a try eventually.
