WWW Wednesday (125) – April 9, 2025

Hello, everyone! It’s Wednesday! That means it is time for another WWW Wednesday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words. I’ll be answering the following questions:

  1. What did you read last?
  2. What are you currently reading?
  3. What will you read next?

What did you read last?

I haven’t finished much this week because I’ve spent more time working in the yard outside. Luckily, the stuff I’ve read has been pretty great. So, it was quality over quantity this week. Here are the books I’ve read since my last check-in:

A Drop of Corruption by Robert Jackson Bennett – 5⭐– This was an absolutely brilliant mix of fantasy and mystery. If you haven’t picked up this series yet, WHAT ARE YOU EVEN DOING? Read it! 🙂 Check out all of my thoughts in my review!

The Shots You Take by Rachel Reid – 4.5⭐ – I enjoyed this second-chance romance between two middle-aged ex-hockey players. One of them had a lot to make up for after how he treated his friend in the past, and I wasn’t always a fan of how he went about it. Showing up to make amends at your ex-friend’s father’s funeral without any word for 12 years? Kind of shitty. The couple grew on me, though, and I did like how their relationship was written. The author’s take on grief was also really emotional and had me deep in my feelings. The ending felt a bit abrupt, but I did like where the characters ended up. All in all, this was an emotional read that left me feeling a bit wrung out but in a good way.

What are you currently reading?

The Raven Scholar by Antonia Hodgson (46%) – The world-building and mystery in this one are great, so far. I also really like the main character. What can I say? I love underdogs. 🙂 I do wish things were moving a little faster at times, but I’m enjoying the writing so much that it isn’t a problem.

Give Me Butterflies by Jillian Meadows (30%) – I’m debating whether I want to DNF this one or not. It’s fine so far, but I didn’t realize grief was going to be such a huge part of the plot. After The Shots You Take, I’m kind of burnt out on that topic for now. The chapter endings are also really abrupt at times, and the writing leans heavily on telling rather than showing. There have been multiple times where I’ve been excited at the end of a chapter to see what will happen next. Then the next chapters skipped the implied next scene and jumped into the future, where a character just recounted bits of the experience. Why couldn’t I have just experienced it alongside them? It’s been a bit frustrating.

What will you read next?

I have some ARCs and a couple of library books that I need to get to next:

The Ashfire King by Chelsea Abdullah, The Gods Time Forgot by Kelsie Sheridan Gonzalez, Go Luck Yourself by Sara Raasch

I hope you’ve all had a great week! What have you been reading? Have you read any of these books? Let me know in the comments and feel free to link your WWW Wednesday posts there, as well. I’d love to see them!

  1. I’ll be curious to hear your thoughts on Go Luck Yourself. I didn’t super love the first book in the series, but as a St. Patrick’s Day birthday girl I am curious about the Prince of St. Patrick’s Day lol.

  2. I spent the day looking at 1 star reviews of some of my favorites. I did the Tainted Cup and was dying of laughter with the one I chose. It was chaotic, in the best way. haha. I think you should DNF it, especially for now. A frustrating book is a sure way to put me in a reading slump. I am a huge mood reader though.

  3. I clearly have no idea what I’m doing because I still have yet to pick up Tainted Cup but seeing everyone and their mum reading and loving the sequel, I feel that it’s time to kick me ownself up the bum to get a move on reading it! 😂 The romance you read also looks great so I may have to add that to my TBR radar but also welp, about Give Me Butterflies! I just snagged a copy going for 99p and after reading what you wrote (esp. about the telling not showing) I’m starting to wonder if I made the right decision, lol. Hope the reads pick up and you enjoy whichever ones you try next! Happy reading 🙂

    • I ended up finishing Give Me Butterflies. It grew on me. It wasn’t great, but I did really like the dynamic of the little family they created. As for The Tainted Cup, GET ON IT!! The books are so good. 🙂
