WWW Wednesday (76) – December 20, 2023

Hello, everyone! It’s Wednesday! That means it is time for another WWW Wednesday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words. I’ll be answering the following questions:

  1. What did you read last?
  2. What are you currently reading?
  3. What will you read next?

What did you read last?

A Demon’s Guide to Wooing a Witch by Sarah Hawley – 4⭐ – If you enjoyed the first book in this series, I’m sure you’ll like this one, too. It had tons of humor, and the main couple had great chemistry. There were some fun spicy moments, and I liked the amnesia plot, as well as them all working together to fight for the rights of half-blood demons. If you are looking for a supernatural romcom with a variety of magical creatures, plenty of lighthearted moments, and some popular romance tropes (enemies to lovers, only one bed/tent), look no further!

Painted Devils by Margaret Owen – 4.5⭐ – I finally read this book! I’ve been putting it off for months despite being really excited to read it. I enjoyed it just as much as the first one. Vanja was still a mess and somehow managed to start her own cult, which of course caused all sorts of problems for her and Emeric. I liked all the traveling they did because it really fleshed out the world some. The details of the different folklore were fun to learn, and the romance between Vanja and Emeric was as awkward and adorable as ever. I loved the twists in this one, and the ending left me furious and devastated. I’ll definitely be back for book three once it is out.

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas – 3⭐ – I finally finished this one. I feel like I’ve been reading it forever, but it has only been a couple of months. It didn’t help that this one did not live up to the hype, at all. The premise was cool, and I enjoyed the beginning of the book. The middle dragged way too much, and the competition to be the king’s champion was way too boring. It’s something that should have been exciting and dangerous, but it instead became repetitive and almost like a dull backdrop. I am intrigued by the world and the characters, though, and I’ve been promised that the story and writing improve. So, I plan to continue with the series and see how it goes.

Heartstopper Vol. 5 by Alice Oseman – 4.75⭐ – This was a great continuation of the series. The boys had to figure out how to deal with insecurities as their desires for greater intimacy grew. Their exploration of physical intimacy was handled in an adorable and affirming manner, which felt like a perfect fit for their relationship. The strain of major life changes also impacted their relationship, and I enjoyed seeing Nick open up to new possibilities for his future.

Clockwork Boys by T. Kingfisher – 4.25⭐ – This was such a great story. It was a pretty run of the mill quest, but the cast of characters really stood out. The team was made up of a group of misfit criminals plus one religious zealot. Their task was a last ditch effort to gain information on a seemingly unstoppable enemy. There were plenty of reasons why all the ‘better’ teams had failed previous efforts, and these unlikely heroes had a hell of a time going up against them. I loved the humor and banter, and there was some pretty freaky stuff, too… undead rats anyone?

A Spellbook for the Once Cursed by Rebecca Crunden – 4.75⭐ – This short story was a great sequel. The focus on Aris needing to adjust back to human life and experiencing PTSD from his time cursed was a natural progression of his arc. The mental health rep was well written, and the world-building packed into this short story was nothing short of magical. The relationship between Enlil and Aris was still so damn cute, and I adored how Enlil helped his partner through his anxieties. I’m so excited there are more stories to come, and the end of this one set up the next conflict really well.

What are you currently reading?

Fellow Travelers by Thomas Mallon (31%) – I really want to watch the TV show, but I always prefer to read the book first, if possible. So, I decided to pick this one up. I like it so far. The McCarthy era sounds like a really horrible time to be working in federal government. Tim has my whole heart, and he is adorably naive. I’m not looking forward to seeing Hawkins break his heart. I cannot see this going any other way, unfortunately.

Inquisitor: Rise of the Red Blade by Delilah S. Dawson (65%) – This book is sooooo good. I never expected it to come in and completely upset my Star Wars book rankings for the year, but I think it will be a real contender for the top spot. I’m always a sucker for more Clone Wars content, which isn’t something I expected from this book, and I love the new look at the start of the Inquisitorius.

What will you read next?

The Dark Is Rising by Susan Cooper, Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands by Heather Fawcett, After the Forest by Kell Woods

I hope you’ve all had a great week! What have you been reading? Have you read any of these books? If so, what did you think? Let me know in the comments!
