Creatures of the Night Book Tag

Happy Halloween! I was tagged earlier today by Dini to complete the Creatures of the Night Book Tag. So, of course, I had to jump on it before the holiday was over. The tag was initially created by Kat from Katytastic over on Booktube.

🧛‍♂️Vampire🧛‍♂️

Silver Under Nightfall by Rin Chupeco

This was such a unique take on vampires, and the zombie vampire creatures were absolutely vicious. The story had so much great action, as well as some steamy poly moments.

🐺Werewolf🐺

Fool Moon by Jim Butcher

I had trouble picking out a book for this one. There are quite a few books about werewolves on my TBR, but only a few came to mind that I’ve read. I landed on Fool Moon because I read it this year and thought it was a good second installment to this series. I also found the information on different types of werewolves to be really interesting.

🧟‍♂️Zombie🧟‍♂️

The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy by Megan Bannen

I had to copy Dini on this one because this is my favorite book with zombies, by far. The romance and humor in this book were top notch, and the world-building and zombie action were great, too.

👻Ghost👻

The City Beautiful by Aden Polydoros

This book is about a boy who becomes possessed by the dybbuk of his friend. The two of them must work together to solve the friend’s murder. I ate this book up! I cannot recommend it enough.

🪄Witch/Warlock/Spellcaster🪄

The Malevolent Seven by Sebastien de Castell

I finally got around to listening to this book recently, and it was a lot of fun. It had plenty of humor, and I always love getting to see a story play out from the perspective of the “villains.”

🧚‍♂️Fairy/Fae🧚‍♂️

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke

I loved the depiction of fae in this book. It illustrated their mysterious, whimsical, and duplicitous nature so well. The writing in this book was just absolutely stunning, as well.

😈Demon😈

Fraternity by Andy Mientus

I loved this dark academia story set in an all-boys boarding school in the 1990s. It explored homophobia, the AIDS crisis, and racism in gut-punching ways. The found family was so good, and I came to care about the boys so much.

👽Alien👽

Light from Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki

This book has been on my mind a lot recently, and I’ve been toying with the idea of re-reading it. So, I was excited to see I’d be able to include it in this post.

🦸‍♂️Superpowered Human🦸‍♂️

The Extraordinaries by TJ Klune

This entire series is so special to me. So, the pick for this prompt was a no-brainer. I loved the ADHD rep. The main character was so EXTRA, and the bi rep was great, too. The friend group at the heart of the story was so fantastic and had such a wonderful dynamic.

There you have it! My choices for the Creatures of the Night Book Tag. I’m not going to tag anyone specific in this one since it is so late in the day on Halloween, but if you feel inspired to participate, please link back to this post so I can see your answers. Happy Halloween! 🎃

Top Ten Tuesday – Perfect Reads for Spooky Season

Top Ten Tuesday - Books Set in a School

Today I’m participating in Top Ten Tuesday, which was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together. Each week there is a new theme/topic, and participants choose ten books that fit it.

This week’s theme is a Halloween freebie. So, I’ve chosen to share 10 books that seem like perfect reads for spooky season. The first five books are ones I’ve read this year, and I think they fit the spooky season vibe. The other five books are on my TBR. I probably won’t get to them before Halloween, but who says spooky season has to end on October 31st? 😊The titles link to my reviews, if available. The covers link to Goodreads in case any of them catch your eye!

Most Anticipated November 2024 Book Releases

December 2023 Book Releases - Header

It is nearly the end of the month, which means it is time to look forward to the upcoming November 2024 book releases. The number of titles this month is actually somewhat manageable, which is a nice change of pace after having so many anticipated releases last month that I had to split the list into two parts. There are some very exciting titles releasing in November, though, including several sequels and series finales. New books from Pascalle Lacelle, Tasha Suri, Ed McDonald, Melissa Caruso, and Susan Dennard are among the ones I’m most excited to pick up. If you’d like to check out last month’s anticipated releases, you can find them here and here. The covers of these November 2024 book releases all link to Goodreads in case you want to add any of them to your TBR! 🙂

A drafted empath. A dreamwalking poet. A world at war.

Chicago, 1917.

Idealistic, aspiring poet, Elliot Stone can make people feel euphoria or horror with a simple touch. But that’s only part of his magical abilities. He can also wake in the dreams of people he cares deeply for.

Stubborn, fiercely independent Warren “Sully” Sullivan is an illusionist with a secret: he feels the emotions of others as visceral sensations. A lifetime of fending for himself and parsing feelings that aren’t his own has left him guarded.

An intoxicating, intense connection on their last night of freedom should be nothing more than a one-night stand. And it is. Until Elliot awakens in Sully’s nightmare with an overpowering urge to save him, regardless of his carefully crafted moral code.

As tragedy draws them together in real life to battle enemies with twisted magic, weakness is a disastrous liability. When keeping safe means revealing his to Elliot, can Sully take the risk?

WWW Wednesday (109) – October 16, 2024

Hello, everyone! It’s Wednesday (actually Thursday)! That means it is (past) time for another WWW Wednesday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words. I’ll be answering the following questions:

  1. What did you read last?
  2. What are you currently reading?
  3. What will you read next?

I’m a bit late on participating in this meme this week. I missed last week completely, though, and didn’t want to miss two weeks in a row. So, here’s my late entry detailing what I’ve been reading the last two weeks.

Monthly Wrap-Up: September 2024

monthly wrap-up

Welcome to this incredibly late monthly wrap-up post! Where did September and the first half of October go? So much has happened in such a short period of time. My wife accepted a new job in the Midwest, and she starts at the beginning of January. So, that means I’ve been getting everything ready for our move from Louisiana to Illinois. We’ve toured homes virtually and had an offer accepted on a house. Now we’re navigating inspections and mortgage applications, not to mention getting our current house ready to go on the market. The packing has been a full-time endeavor, and I’m only just getting started. It is all a bit overwhelming, but I know we’ll manage it.

On the blogging front, my blog hopping has still been extremely limited. Unfortunately, that is unlikely to change until sometime next year. With our impending move, I’m just extremely busy with the house buying/selling process and packing up all of our stuff. I’m honestly struggling to even read at this point. I just don’t have nearly as much free time as I used to.

Book Blurb

Rejected even by her own kind, Anathema, the albino dragon, always thought she’d live her centuries alone until, on a whim—on a compulsion—she rescued a tiny black kitten from certain death.

She could never have guessed what his companionship would mean for her. More, she could never have predicted the impact sharing her life with him would have on her and so many others.

Or the powerful persona lurking in that tiny feline morsel she called Tidbit.

About the Author

Stephanie Barr is a part-time novelist, full-time rocket scientist, mother of three children and slave to many cats. Anything else even vaguely interesting about her can be found in her writing since she puts a little bit of herself in everything she writes … just not the same piece.
