WWW Wednesday (85) – February 21, 2024

Hello, everyone! It’s Wednesday! That means it is time for another WWW Wednesday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words. I’ll be answering the following questions:

  1. What did you read last?
  2. What are you currently reading?
  3. What will you read next?

What did you read last?

Voyage of the Damned by Frances White – 4.25⭐ – This was a riveting murder mystery mixed with magic and politics. It was also super queer and had tons of witty humor. I loved it, and I am so glad I got the beautiful Illumicrate edition of the book. See all my thoughts in my review!

Faebound by Saara El-Arifi – 2⭐ – I really should have DNF’d this one. So much of the book was boring, and the world-building was rough AF. The characters were pretty one-dimensional, and there wasn’t nearly as much romance as I was expecting in a romantasy. I definitely won’t be reading the sequel.

Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas – 3.75⭐ – This book really felt its length, which makes me scared of the next three chonkers in the series. It also felt like a completely different series from the first few books and had much more of an ACOTAR vibe to it. Personally, I’m not a fan of the Rowan and Aelin relationship, and I much preferred their more platonic dynamic from Heir of Fire. The end of this book was absolutely a wild ride, though, and it has me curious to see where the series goes next.

Disciples of Chaos by M. K. Lobb – 4 ⭐ – I was completely obsessed with this book while reading it and flew through it really quickly. It added a lot to the world-building and history of the magic, and the action-packed ending had me on the edge of my seat. Unfortunately, I thought the ending undermined a lot of the character work in the novel and sent the wrong message. The more I think about the book, the more I am let down. So, the four-star rating is probably a bit generous… See all my thoughts in my review!

Proper Scoundrels by Allie Therin – 4.5⭐ – I loved the Magic in Manhattan series by Allie Therin. So, I was stoked to see there is a spin-off series. Wesley and Sebastian are so good together, and I loved their grumpy/marshmallow dynamic. Their relationship had me in my feelings. The story took a bit too long to really kick off, though, and I’m not sure the plot will be totally understandable to those who haven’t read the first series. I still love the characters and the dialogue so much, though. So, this was easily 4.5 stars for me. 🙂

What are you currently reading?

An Education in Malice by S.T. Gibson (42%) – I’m enjoying this so far, and I’ve read almost half of it in pretty much one sitting. The prose totally sets the scene for the dark academia vampire story. It is beautiful and easy to read. The story focuses intensely on the characters and their obsession with one another and their academic rivalry. There’s not much of a plot beyond that, and I do wish we got a bit more from the academic setting. I’m still having a good time with it, though.

Open Water by Caleb Azumah Nelson (10%) – I saw this book over on Dini’s blog and was inspired to pick it up. Luckily, my library had an ebook copy available, and I was able to start it right away. I haven’t made it very far yet, but I’m curious to see how the relationship at the center of the story unfolds.

Us, Et Cetera by Kit Vincent (28%) – This sci fi love story between two androids has been on my TBR for a while now. I just started it, and it is honestly a bit depressing so far. One of the androids is constantly bullied and treated like a slave, and he’s super lonely. The family gets a newer model, and the older android begins to constantly fear he will be scrapped. He tries to become friends with the new android, though, which doesn’t seem to be going well at first. The author has done a great job making me feel horrible for this poor android, and the characterization is just so, so good. I only hope it gets a bit happier before I become too depressed. lol.

Swann’s Way by Marcel Proust (21%) – I finally made some more progress on this one. I read another 25 pages or so and enjoyed them a lot. It was all about the protagonist’s experience with reading books as a kid, and I found it easy to relate to.

What will you read next?

Evergreen by Devin Greenlee, Heartless Hunter by Kristen Ciccarelli, Slippery Creatures by KJ Charles

I hope you’ve all had a great week! What have you been reading? Have you read any of these books? If so, what did you think? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I saw Open Water on Dini’s blog too. Her review made me want to pick it up!! I need to finish some arcs though. I somehow dug a whole really fast. lol. I can’t wait to see what you think of Heartless Hunter! I haven’t seen too many reviews about it yet.

  2. I hope you enjoy your current reads! I’ll be starting Throne of Glass after my current audiobook. We will see how I like the series, haha. I read them around the time Kingdom of Ash came out but don’t remember much.

  3. Ooh, I’m so curious to see what you’ll think of Open Water. I hope you enjoy it 🙂
I’m also excited to see that you enjoyed Voyage of the Damned. It has such a unique premise so I’m keen to pick that up at some point this year (hopefully, lol). Happy reading!
