WWW Wednesday (109) – October 16, 2024

Hello, everyone! It’s Wednesday (actually Thursday)! That means it is (past) time for another WWW Wednesday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words. I’ll be answering the following questions:

  1. What did you read last?
  2. What are you currently reading?
  3. What will you read next?

I’m a bit late on participating in this meme this week. I missed last week completely, though, and didn’t want to miss two weeks in a row. So, here’s my late entry detailing what I’ve been reading the last two weeks.

What did you read last?

The Courting of Bristol Keats by Mary E. Pearson – 3.25⭐ – This was a good romantasy. There wasn’t anything new or innovative in this one, but it was entertaining. You can find all my thoughts in my review!

In Memoriam by Alice Winn – 5⭐ – This book was such a gut punch. It followed two boys as they grew up during WWI and went off to war. The story was gruesome and sad, but their friendship and eventual love story was so beautiful. I loved how the story was structured. It integrated letters and newspaper clippings into the prose, and it was so effective. I found myself frantically searching for names in the lists of dead in the newspaper to make sure my favorite characters were okay. It made the reading experience feel much more immersive.

A Whisper in the Walls by Scott Reintgen – 4⭐ – I enjoyed this book more than the first one. I liked getting to explore more of the politics of the world, and all of the scheming was fun to follow. The pacing did feel a bit choppy at times, but I liked that there was quite a bit of action interspersed with all the politics and planning. I’ll probably pick up the next book just to see where it all goes next, but it will be a library read because I just don’t love these books enough to have them take up space.

Amari and the Despicable Wonders by B. B. Alston – 5⭐ – I loved this new installment in the Amari series. It was incredibly fast-paced and had tons of action. As always, I adored the cast. Although, they do seem to have plateaued somewhat in character growth. The addition of the ghost to their crew was one of my favorite things about the story. He was hilarious and adorable. Some of the logic and world-building about the magic felt rushed or wonky at times, but I still had such a great time with this story that I can’t fault it.

What are you currently reading?

An Academy for Liars by Alexis Henderson (22%) – I’m finally reading some dark academia. I usually read a lot of it in September, but I didn’t get the chance because of ARCs and everything else going on. I’m enjoying this one so far. The vibes remind me of The Magicians, but I like the main character a lot more, at least so far. I’m very curious to see more about the Academy and the powers of persuasion they teach there. It’s all super interesting.

The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien (59%) – Slow and steady wins the race. I’m still making progress on this one, and the mythology is just so engrossing. It’s just a lot to take in. Hence, the slowness.

What will you read next?

I really have no idea what I’ll read next. I need to tackle some ARCs, but I haven’t been in the mood. Here are a few newish books I’ve got my eye on that haven’t already been packed up for the move.

Odd Spirits by S.T. Gibson, Prince of Fortune by Lisa Tirreno, The Gods Below by Andrea Stewart

I hope you’ve all had a great week! What have you been reading? Have you read any of these books? Let me know in the comments and feel free to link your WWW Wednesday posts there, as well. I’d love to see them!

  1. Despite being busy packing, looks like you’re still reading at a steady enough clip! Probably is a nice way to de-stress. 🙂 Looks like I’ll probably get to read Bristol Keats after all; it might be in one of my December (?) book boxes I think.
