WWW Wednesday (80) – January 17, 2024

Hello, everyone! It’s Wednesday! That means it is time for another WWW Wednesday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words. I’ll be answering the following questions:

  1. What did you read last?
  2. What are you currently reading?
  3. What will you read next?

What did you read last?

The City of Stardust by Georgia Summers – 3.5⭐ – I liked this book, but it didn’t blow me away as much as I expected it would. The writing was beautiful, and the ideas were fascinating. The world-building and characters just kind of let me down a bit. You can read all of my thoughts in my review!

Dark Star Burning, Ash Falls White by Amelie Wen Zhao – 4⭐ – What an ending!!! I loved the additions to the world-building, and Zen and Lan grew so much. The pace of this book was really fast, and I do think it did somewhat of a disservice to the villains and side characters. They were all still great. I just wish there had been more time with them all. The end had me sobbing. The last chapter was so sweet, and I’m really glad there was a time jump. Overall, I was satisfied with this conclusion.

A Door in the Dark by Scott Reintgen – 3.25⭐ – I didn’t love this one, but I didn’t hate it either. It had a unique mix of elements, including magic academy, classism, horror, and wilderness survival. The magic academy bits were my favorite, and I liked the commentary on classism. The wilderness survival parts of the story became repetitive after a while, though, and I found myself just waiting for them to make it back. It did set up a really interesting story of revenge and political subterfuge for the future books. So, I’ll be picking up the sequel to see where things go next. I do think it is necessary to warn potential readers that the main character is an insufferable, selfish, know-it-all. It got old, fast. Luckily, there was enough interesting stuff to hold my interest despite her. lol.

The Assassin’s Blade by Sarah J. Maas – 3.75⭐ – This collection of novellas provided good background information. I’m glad I waited to read it until after the third book. If I’d read this first, I may have DNFd the series. The novellas aren’t bad. I just think they were better having the emotional connection to Celaena after reading the other books. Now I’m super pumped to see her confront her old master in the fourth book. I do wish there had been a bit more of Sam in these stories after how much importance the novels put on his relationship with Celaena, but I enjoyed the bits we got.

What are you currently reading?

Breeze Spells and Bridegrooms by Sarah Wallace & S.O. Callahan (25%) – This is such a cute story so far. I’ve really enjoyed learning about the magic systems, and the two main characters are hilarious together. They “hate” each other so much, but it is clear to everyone around them that there is more than meets the eye to their feelings. I can’t wait to see what happens as their frosty relationship continues to heat up.

The Atlas Complex by Olivie Blake (23%) – Ahhhh!!! The final book is finally here. I love these awful humans so much, and I’m enjoying being back inside their pretentious brains. I’m very curious to see how all of this will play out. Tristan and Callum better end up together (or at least get together). I’m enjoying the Nico and Gideon content so far, and I hope they are happy, too. Although, I have a sneaking suspicion it will all end in disaster.

Swann’s Way by Marcel Proust (18%) – I finally read a little more of this one. I find it very soothing to read because of the tangential, wordy prose. It is really hard to find a place to stop, though, because there aren’t really many chapters. It just goes on and on for hundreds of pages. lol.

What will you read next?

Infinity Alchemist by Kacen Callender, Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse, Don’t Want You Like a Best Friend by Emma R. Alban

I hope you’ve all had a great week! What have you been reading? Have you read any of these books? If so, what did you think? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I will see what you think of the overall trilogy and then I might finally pick up The Atlas Six. haha. I can’t wait to see what you think of the next ToG book. I’m lowkey nervous you are going to end up hating it all anyways. haha. Have a great week!

    • The Atlas Six books are definitely not something I would recommend to everyone. If you’ve read The Secret History and wanted that story but with magic, then you’ll probably like it. The characters are almost all awful people, and the writing, characters, and themes are all pretentious AF. I love dark academia. So, it is right up my alley. lol.

I’ve enjoyed all of the ToG books so far, some more than others. I’m sure I’ll enjoy seeing where the series goes next. 🙂

      • hahaha!! I love dark academia but I have seen some mixed reviews. I’ve been on the fence but I kind of want to know now with all that you’ve mentioned. LOL I might just give book 1 a go at some point.

I can’t wait to see what you think at the end! Have you read ACOTAR? I feel like you did but I can’t remember. Also, Crescent City 1&2??

      • I have read ACOTAR! I enjoyed it, overall, with books 2 and 3 being my favorites. I haven’t made it to Crescent City yet. I decided to get through Throne of Glass first.

If you enjoy audiobooks, I definitely recommend the audios of the Atlas books. They have a full cast with different narrators for the various POVs, and they really do a great job of bringing the characters to life.

      • Okay, good! I was going to suggest that ACOTAR is a must to begin Crescent City! It would not hit the same and spoilers.. lol. I’m not sure if ToG comes in to play but there are signs that it could.

I struggle with audiobooks but I want to try again. I might give these a go because a full cast would probably be much better!! Thanks!

    • I just finished Breeze Spells and Bridegrooms, and it was an adorable read. I’m looking forward to Don’t Want You Like a Best Friend, too. My library hold came in, and I’m excited to get to it. 🙂

  2. I definitely agree with The City of Stardust. I ended up giving it 3 stars. Nothing was explained that well.

    • Yeah. I had high hopes for it almost until the end. I kept hoping for more answers and some concrete world-building, but it never came. It’s a shame because I did really love the writing and the mystery it built up.
