WWW Wednesday (142) – August 20, 2025

Hello, everyone! It’s Wednesday! That means it is time for another WWW Wednesday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words. I’ll be answering the following questions:

  1. What did you read last?
  2. What are you currently reading?
  3. What will you read next?

What did you read last?

I didn’t get around to participating in this meme last week. So, here is a quick look at the four books I’ve finished in the last two weeks since my last WWW Wednesday check-in:

A Curse Carved in Bone by Danielle L. Jensen (3.75⭐) – This was a really solid sequel that wrapped up the duology well. It took a while to get going, but once it did it really went for it. The twist pulled the rug out from under me, and the magic in this story was really cool. I definitely recommend it if you are interested in a Viking-inspired romantasy.

Ascension by S.T. Gibson (3.75⭐) – This book was a rather slow character study. There was some cool magic, especially toward the end, but most of the story was really focused on the internal world of the characters. Specifically, Rhys took center stage in this one, and the reader got a deep look at his neuroses. The psych nerd in me enjoyed it, but anyone hoping for a lot of plot development will probably be disappointed. I loved how much the characters grew, though, and enjoyed seeing the power throuple develop and healthier dynamic. See all my thoughts in my review!

The Lavender Blade by E.L. Deards (3⭐) – I loved the premise of this book and its characters. However, the writing and world-building left me wanting more. You can find all of my thoughts in my review!

He Who Drowned the World by Shelley Parker-Chan (???⭐) – I haven’t settled on a final rating for this book yet, but it’s safe to say I loved it. It was epic yet intimate, and the plot was a wild ride of war, betrayal, and destiny. I can’t recommend this duology enough!

Immortal Consequences by I. V. Marie (49%) – I’m not quite sure what to think of this one yet. I really like the characters, and the concept is interesting. There are just a lot of details about the world that feel forced to serve the narrative. I’m curious to see where it all ends up, though, and I’m hopeful that my questions about why the world is set up the way it is will be answered. We’ll see.

Wings of Steel and Fury by Sarah J. Daley (10%) – I’ve only just started this one, but I’m enjoying it so far. I’m always down for a new fallen angel story, and this one is an interesting take on the trope so far.

Human Rites by Juno Dawson (23%) – It took me a while to remember what was going on because this book definitely just jumps right back into things. It has been an interesting story so far, though, with the characters grappling with the bonkers twist from the end of book two. I can’t wait to see how it all ends!

What will you read next?

Hopefully, it will be one of these…

Dragonfall by L. R. Lam, Arcana Academy by Elise Kova, A Treachery of Swans by A.B. Poranek

I hope you’ve all had a great week! What have you been reading? Have you read any of these books? Let me know in the comments and feel free to link your WWW Wednesday posts there, as well. I’d love to see them!

  1. OOooo, I’m real curious to know what you think of Arcana Academy. They were pushing that hard at SDCC and I almost bought a copy while I was there. It definitely sounds intriguing!

  2. I’m glad that you enjoyed He Who Drowned the World I loved the first one but found this one was just too grim. The dark parts of the story felt unrelenting and there was hardly any warmth between the characters to offset it. I think I wanted more light and shade.
I hope you enjoy whichever book you decide to pick up next.

  3. I’ve heard so many good things about Arcana Academy! I hope you love it whenever you pick it up 🙂 I need to read Parker-Chan’s duology but I’m admittedly very intimidated by it? I’m glad to hear that it was a great conclusion for you though! Enjoy whichever book(s) you get to next and happy reading!
